Admissions Checklist for Transfer Students

If you’re interested in transferring your credits to the University of Michigan-Flint, we’ll help walk you through the process here (Printer-friendly version):

  1. Visit our campus: If you haven’t already, we strongly encourage you to visit our campus and see for yourself firsthand if University of Michigan-Flint is a good fit for you.
  2. Apply: Submit a completed application. Apply online or download a printable version.  There is a $30 non-refundable Application Fee, payable online or by submitting it with your paper application.
  3. Submit Transcripts: Submit transcripts from all prior post-secondary schools attended, including: junior/community colleges, colleges or universities. High school transcripts are requested if you have earned less than 24 college/university credits.
  4. Supporting Documents: Submit all supporting documents with your application for admission. This includes essays, résumés and letters of recommendation.

    Tips on writing your essay:  Although the Admissions Essay is optional, it provides an opportunity to allow us to get to know you better and is used for students applying for scholarshipsWhile you can write about any subject, you might choose to discuss some of the following:

    - Reason for choosing your major
    - Intended career field
    Motivation to go to college
    - Obstacles or struggles that you have overcome to pursue your education

  5. Request for Fee Waiver: If you wish to request a waiver of the application fee for reasons of financial hardship, you must apply downloading and completing a printable application; also complete the Request for Fee Waiver form and return both documents to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  6. Admission: You will be notified of our decision within 2-4 weeks of application submission and receipt of all required documentation.


 Transfer of Credits:

  • All acceptable college courses that appear on an official transcript and have been completed at another regionally accredited* institution for which a letter grade of “C” or better has been earned will be given University of Michigan-Flint degree-seeking credit.

  • It is a requirement that all transfer students must earn a minimum of 45 semester hours at University of Michigan-Flint, including the last 30 hours. Students also must satisfy all requirements for the degree that they are pursuing.

  • Exceptions to this policy can be considered only by petition to the appropriate Academic Standards Committee.

* To be considered for transfer equivalency, course work must be completed at an institution that is fully accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: New England, Middle States, Southern, North Central, Western, and Northwest.
