Why study Secondary Education?

You enjoy working with youth. You want to help impact and shape the lives of young people while helping them learn. Pursuing a teaching degree in Secondary Education qualifies you to teach students in grades 7-12 in specific areas of concentration.

Why study Secondary Education at the University of Michigan–Flint?

  • Preparation. Students interested in pursuing an Education degree will need to complete the General Education requirements as well as the prerequisites for the Education program before applying to the Education program.
  • Personalization. Students in the Secondary Education program select both a major and minor. Choose from Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computers, History, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Physics, Speech, and many others! Find the subject concentrations that best match your interests.
  • Certification. Once you complete the coursework for your Education degree you will be prepared to take and pass the state test for Teacher Certification. Our students who are recommended for teacher certification have a 100% pass rate on the state exam.
  • Experience.  All Education students must complete student teaching prior to graduation. The Education Department works with students to find local placements to get the best experience possible.
  • Travel. Study abroad! The Education program takes several trips each year for students to complete part of their student teaching abroad. Experience a new culture while translating your coursework into the classroom.
