Parents Helping Parents
Parents have many questions and concerns regarding the college admissions process. Emotional support from another parent, who has a child already enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint, can be helpful in navigating the steps of the admissions process.
UM-Flint’s Parent to Parent network provides an opportunity for parents of currently enrolled students to share their experiences with parents of prospective students. The program strives to provide pertinent information through phone calls, emails, and face to face meetings/events. With one to one support, prospective parents will realize they are not alone.
Support Through Sharing
At the core of UM-Flint’s Parent to Parent network is a group of parents with unique and valuable information who are available to provide that information and caring ear to parents of prospective students. These volunteer ‘helping parents’ have asked many of the same questions which parents of prospective students ask. They understand feelings of nervousness, stress and fear which may need to be shared. Admissions staff will provide additional support and guidance both to prospective parents and current parents.
Referrals to the Program
When a parent of a prospective student expresses interest in the program, the program coordinator works with the Admission Counselor to assess how the program can be most helpful. A match is made with a current parent whom it is felt can best meet the needs of the parent. A parent requesting a UM-Flint’s Parent to Parent contact will be contacted by an Admission Counselor as soon as possible after the initial request. All matches are carefully made by the program's coordinator.
Becoming a Helping Parent
Our volunteer parents are an essential part of UM-Flint’s Parent to Parent network. Upon completion of the online signup form, a quick determination is made regarding the best ways to use each individual's valuable expertise and dedication in providing recruitment support.
