Orientation FAQ - First-year Student

Is orientation mandatory?

Yes. Orientation at the University of Michigan-Flint is a required program designed to facilitate a smooth transition to UM-Flint and assist you in making the most of your college experience. An orientation fee will be added to your tuition bill and you will only be able to register for classes by attending orientation.

When and where is orientation?

The sessions begin promptly at 9am (check-in begins at 8am in the lobby of the First Street Residence Hall) on Tuesday and go until Wednesday at 5pm. The session is overnight and you will stay in the First Street Residence Hall. Check here for a list of dates and information on how to register for your session in SIS. If you are already registered and want to check your date, or to reschedule your session, log in to SIS and choose “Register or Reschedule for Orientation” under the New Students Start Here tab.

Where can I find driving directions and where do I park for orientation?

You can park in the Mill Street Parking Deck and you do not need a permit. Visit maps.umflint.edu for an interactive map and for driving directions or you can use the following GPS address to find the parking deck:

Can I bring my parents and/or guests to orientation?

There is a separate Parent/Guardian orientation that takes place on the second day of your session. There is a $30 fee for the first guest and $20 for each additional guest. Reservations can be made here. This program will be separate from your session but occurring at the same time to give your parent/guardian the tools and information needed to help you be more successful here at UM-Flint.

What should I wear/bring to orientation?

Due to the session occurring over two days, you will want to bring clothing for the second day, along with personal toiletries. Linens for your room will be provided. At the end of day one you will have an opportunity to use the Recreation Center, which includes the university pool and hot tub. If you would like to use the facilities it is advised to bring appropriate attire. During both days we will be walking around campus so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress casual. You should also bring a driver’s license, passport, or government issued photo-ID to get your MCard (Student ID card).  

When do I purchase my textbooks?

Once you have registered for your courses, you can purchase textbooks through the “Shop For Textbooks” link in your SIS account or bring in a copy of your schedule a few weeks before the semester to the bookstore.

Where and when do I get my parking permit, and why do I need one?

Parking permits are available on the stage on the first floor of the University Pavilion the first two weeks of every semester and through the ITS Helpdesk in MSB. There is no charge for your parking permit. After the second week of classes, you will need your permit to park on campus to avoid receiving a parking ticket. We will show this location during your orientation session.

When and where do I go for my Challenge Program Information Session?

The Challenge Program Information Session is required for all students admitted through the challenge program. The session will be held at the end of day two of your orientation session from 5:15 pm – 6:15 pm. Your parents/guardians are also asked to attend.

What is the Housing Waiver form and where do I send it?

The form is needed so that you may stay the night in the First Street Residence Hall. If you are under 18 you will need a parent or guardian to sign the form and send it in to the Office of Housing and Residential Life. If you will be 18 or older at the time of your orientation session, you can sign the form.

Will I need to bring any money to buy food at the orientation?

No, food will be provided to you throughout the two days of the orientation session as is noted on the agenda found here. However, there are many vending machines on campus so you may want to bring a small amount of cash to use them, particularly during the evening in the Residence Hall.

When do I register for courses?

You can register for courses once open registration begins. You can find out when you are able to register for classes in SIS under “check your registration status.” There is an opportunity to meet with an advisor at orientation; however, you may not want to wait until then because courses fill up quickly.

How can I find out who my advisor is?

Log in to SIS and choose the Student Services tab. Once there, select Student Records and then View Your Academic Advisor.

What should I wear to orientation?

Dress casually and wear appropriate foot wear for walking around campus.

What are the hours you are open?

How do I get my Mcard and parking permit?
ITS distributes parking permits and/or validation stickers to students registered for the current semester in conjunction with the Mcard distribution at the beginning of the semester (preferred method) in the University Pavilion on the first floor. If you are a new student be sure to bring a State Issued ID to get your Mcard, along with the Make, Model, and License Plate number of your car in order to recieve your Parking Permit. These can also be obtained from ITS throughout the semester. First year students will receive their Mcard at orientation.

How do I take my placement exams?
Computer Science 121, Math, Reading, and Writing placement exams are administered in the Student Success Center, 285 UPAV. You can simply walk in to take the exams, but be sure to plan for a four hour time limit. Foreign Language placement exams are administered in the Foreign Language department, 344 FH, (810) 762-3370.

How do I log into Blackboard?
Username is your Uniqname and password is your LAN password. Blackboard can be accessed at the 'My' link (upper right hand side) on the UM-Flint website.

How do I check my UM-Flint E-mail?
Username is your Uniqname and password is your LAN password. E-mail can be accessed at the 'My' link (upper right hand side) on the UM-Flint website.

What is my UMID?
Everyone has their own 8 digit UMID number. If you don't know your UMID, you can log in to SIS. Once logged in, you can find your UMID in the Personal Information menu, under "View Your UMID".

How can I order my transcripts?
If you attended UM-Flint between 2000 and the present term use the Student Information System (SIS) online process. Click on the Student Services Menu -> Student Records ->Request Printed/Official Transcripts
Or Transcript order forms are available in the Office of the Registrar.

Are you taking walk-in appointments?
We accept walk-in appointments all day, every day from 8 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday – Thursday and 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Fridays; however, we do not make same day appointments.

Pre-Orientation

I need to register for Orientation.  What do I do?

Log in to the Student Information System at sis.umflint.edu. Login using your uniqname and LAN password. Once logged in click ‘New Students Start Here’.

Placement Exams

How and where do I complete my placement exams?

If you are a new student you complete your placement exams online, in Blackboard. If you are a current student you complete placement exams in the Student Success Center, 285 UPAV.

Why am I unable to login to Blackboard?
You must use your Uniqname and your Blackboard/Email/LAN password to access Blackboard.

I don’t know my Uniqname or my LAN password.  Now what?
If you do not know your Uniqname and LAN password, you must login to SIS to find your Uniqname and create a new LAN password.

I’m trying to login to Blackboard.  Why do I get the following error message:  “An error occurred while the system was processing your login request”?
If you are using your uniqname@umflint.edu use ONLY your uniqname.

When do I need to complete my placement exams?
ASAP. They MUST be completed at least two weeks prior to orientation.

My orientation is tomorrow and I still have not completed my placement exams.  Should I reschedule my orientation?
No. Complete your placement exams today and attend orientation tomorrow as scheduled.

LAN Password

I am unable to set my LAN password.  Why?

Your LAN password must be at least 8 characters in length and include a mix of numbers and letters. You must have a complexity score of at least 50%. Password filtering is enabled to not allow commonly used passwords.  Do not use common names and words, or any three consecutive letters from your name or Uniqname, forwards or backwards.

Why am I getting the following error message: “Password mismatch”?
The password that you typed into the first box does not match the password you typed into the second box.  Be sure to type the exact same password in both boxes.

Why am I getting the following error message: “Either the password is too short or password uniqueness restrictions have not been met”?
You have entered a password that is not at least 8 characters in length, does not contain a mix of numbers and letters, or does not have a complexity score of at least 50%.
