Guest Student Orientation

Welcome from the Academic Advising & Career Center. Guest student status means that you are pursuing a degree at another institution and plan to complete just one or perhaps a few courses at UM-Flint to transfer back to your home school. It is up to your home school to determine how courses transfer. You should verify that the courses you take at UM-Flint will fulfill your needs at your home institution.

As a Guest Student, your transcripts are not entered into our system. As a result, you will need to obtain permission to register for any course that has a prerequisite. Typically, this is done by contacting the department and showing them a copy of your transcript that verifies completion of the prerequisite at your home institution. You can view the locations and phone numbers of each academic department here:  http://www.umflint.edu/departments_offices.htm

For example, let’s say you’d like to complete Calculus 1 (MTH 121) at UM-Flint. Our prerequisite is Pre-Calculus (MTH 120) with a grade of C or better. You would need to show our Math Department proof that you have successfully completed Pre-Calculus. Upon approval of the department chair, the Math Department will enter a registration override that will allow you to register for the class in our Student Information System (SIS—see the instructions sent with your admission letter).

As a guest student, you are eligible to register during open registration. You can view the semester calendar for open registration dates here: http://www.umflint.edu/registrar/calendars.htm

Upon completion of your course(s) at UM-Flint, you will need to have an official transcript sent to your home institution. You can view the instructions and forms needed to do this here: http://www.umflint.edu/registrar/transcripts.htm.

While orientation is not required, we recommend that you attend an Express Orientation session. You can view more information about Express Orientation here: http://www.umflint.edu/advising/transfer_orientation.htm.
