Naval Captain Cloyes "Red" Hoover

Naval Captain Cloyes "Red" Hoover is a dedicated Alumnus, Engineer and American.  Red's education in engineering and service in the United States Navy has positioned him as a leader in the fight against global terrorism.  Red has been the commanding officer of a Naval engineering center that designs, builds, tests, deploys and supports many of the finest frontline command and control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems in use today.  The advancements made by his unit have directy resulted in the increased safelty of our soldiers.

Most recently, Red was responsible for ensuring that soldiers on the battle field were provided Mine Resistant Armor Protected (MRAP) vehicles.  Under his command, a team of engineers was able to meet a goal of integrating electronic systems into the vehicles by protecting them from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Afghanistan and Iraq.  While working to reach teh production goal set by congress, Red was meeting with the highest ranking military and civilian officials including the Secretray of Defense, Secretary of the Navy and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In addition to his service in the U.S. Military, Red has continued to stay connected to UM-Flint.  After returning to campus for a career fair in 2007, Red began to work with the Academic Advising and Career Center to develop a program to recruit UM-Flint students and alumni.  As a result, several students and alumni have found rewarding careers.  Red has also continued his support of students through a contribution to the Student Housing Scholarship.

Captain Cloyes "Red" Hoover's service to teh county, community and the Univeristy of Michigan-Flint make him deserving of our Distinguished Alumni Award for 2008.
