INTRODUCTION TO THE MICROFILM COLLECTION

Karen Ann Young processed the Charles Stewart Mott Papers and wrote the following finding aid for it in 1978.  It was edited in 2008 in order to provide a web-based description of the collection.  In the original arrangement of the papers, the accession number 77-7 was assigned to the collection as a whole, and each folder was given a number which followed a numeric sequence beginning with this accession number.  To find a particular folder in the microfilm edition of the papers, however, it is necessary to request the reel number.  This number is in the column on the far left in the folder list below.  Although folder numbers are arranged in numerical order, the reel numbers are in somewhat random order.  Besides folders, some material was kept in boxes, which were assigned numbers in a different sequence.  This material is listed below, interspersed with the material in folders.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

II.  Automotive pioneer, industrial pioneer, philanthropist, executive, businessman, banker, sailor and soldier, community and educational leader Charles Stewart Mott was born in Newark, New Jersey, on June 2, 1875, son of John Coon Mott and Isabella Turnbull Stewart Mott.

Mott's early education was in the New York public schools. In 1892, he graduated from Stevens High School in Hoboken, New Jersey. From 1892 to 1894, Mott attended Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, New Jersey, studying mechanical engineering. The years 1894 and 1895 were spent studying zymotechnology (science of fermentation) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and chemistry of fermentation in Munich, Germany, to learn new techniques useful in the family cider and vinegar business in Bouckville, New York. After studying, touring Europe on his bicycle, and attending concerts and art museums, Mott returned to Stevens Institute in 1895. After graduation from Stevens Institute in 1897 as a mechanical engineer, Mott worked with his father manufacturing carbonating machinery for the C. S. Mott Company of New York, so named to encourage young Mott to join the business.

Mott had joined the New York State Naval Militia in 1894, and when the Spanish-American War broke out, he served on active duty in the United States Navy as Gunner's Mate, First Class, on the U.S.S. Yankee.

After the Spanish-American War, Mott worked in the family businesses, which included the C. S. Mott Company and the Weston-Mott Company, which manufactured wire wheels.

In 1899 his father died, and in 1900 C. S. Mott became factory superintendent and secretary of the Weston-Mott Company of Utica, New York.  After the advent of the automobile and shift from wire wheels to wooden artillery-type wheels, Mott began designing and manufacturing axles. On June 4, 1905, W. C. Durant, creator of General Motors, wrote to C. S. Mott: "Would you entertain a proposition of removing or establishing a branch factory at Flint, Michigan..."  Mott consented, and final arrangements for Weston-Mott to move to Flint were finalized Labor Day weekend, 1905. In the spring of 1906 Weston-Mott began building a factory next to the new Buick factory in Flint, and the company was to become the largest axle manufacturer in the world. It was this move to Flint that paved the road to Mr. Mott's great industrial and philanthropic career. The Flint plant of Weston-Mott was completed early in 1907, and on February 1, 1907, Mott brought his family to live in Flint. His first home was at 406 East Kearsley. In 1909 he built another house at 423 Kearsley, and in 1917 the Motts moved into Applewood, which was Mott's home until his death.

In 1908 General Motors was organized and soon bought 49 percent of Weston-Mott Company stock, and in 1913 Mott exchanged the remaining 51 percent of Weston-Mott Company stock in return for General Motors stock. That same year, 1913, C. S. Mott became a director of General Motors and held that office until his death. The various positions he held with General Motors were as member of the Board of Directors (1913-1973); Vice President (1916-1937); member of the Executive Committee (1922-1929), Finance Committee (1929-1937) and as member and chairman of the Audit Committee (1939-1967).

Married four times, Mott had six children. Three were born by his first wife Ethel Culbert Harding, whom he married in June, 1900:  Aimee Mott, born 1902; Elsa Beatrice Mott, born 1904; and Charles Stewart Harding Mott, born 1906. His last marriage was on October 13, 1934, when Mr. Mott and Ruth Mott Rawlings, a distant cousin, were married in El Paso, Texas. They had three children: Susan Elizabeth Mott, born 1936; Stewart Rawlings Mott, born 1937; and Maryanne Turnbull Mott, born 1942.

Mott was elected mayor of Flint for three terms, in 1912, 1913 and 1918, and contributed greatly to the growing Flint by improving streets, sidewalks, sewer system, lighting and its fire department. Although entering the gubernatorial campaign on the Republican ticket late in 1920, Mott finished third in a field of nine.

His great philanthropic contribution to Flint was the incorporation of the Mott Foundation in 1926, which concentrated its efforts to help Flint develop in social and educational aspects and through improvement in health care. Flint became a model city for the world through the development of its educational facilities with the cooperation of the Flint Board of Education. C. S. Mott spent the remainder of his life concerning himself with details of the operation of the Foundation. Mott's generosity was not been confined to Flint but reached other cities throughout the United States, such as the Mott Children's Health Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the University of Chicago Industrial Relations Building in Chicago, Illinois, for the development of a program for economic education, leadership and communications.

Mott had a strong sense of both personal and public responsibilities and contributed greatly not only financially but with his personal time, energy and interest to many civic developments and activities such as the Flint Community Service Center, Mott Children's Health Center, Y.W.C.A., and Mott Boys' Camp. Other examples of his support were Boy Scouts, Goodwill Industries, Flint's College and Cultural Center, the Red Feather Fund, hospitals, parks and recreation. He personally participated in "Operation Tornado" in 1953 as a carpenter to help rebuild homes destroyed by a tornado and was later awarded a life membership in the American Federation of Painters and Decorators Local 1052.

In addition to service in the Spanish-American War, Mott served as a major in the Quartermaster Corps from 1911 to 1919. In this capacity, Mott was responsible for coordination of wartime industrial production for the Detroit area. In 1924 he was commissioned Colonel in the Army Ordinance Reserve, and from 1924 to 1925 he was a civilian aide for Michigan to the Secretary of War. In 1941, Mott was honorary chairman of the Flint Committee of United China Relief, and in 1942 was named to the Civilian Defense Council.

Mott was active in several Flint and Detroit clubs and received numerous honors and awards as expressions of appreciation, including the Big Brother Award in 1955, bestowed on him by President Eisenhower. He received several honorary degrees from universities throughout the United States. Flint honored Mott with several community birthday parties to show appreciation for his many contributions. On his 80th birthday, Mott presented the Flint College and Cultural Center with the Charles Stewart Mott Community Center of Science and Applied Arts, and he broke ground for the University of Michigan building. He donated the Charles Stewart Mott Library to the Charles Stewart Mott Community College, which was named for him after his death.

An Episcopalian, Mott actively participated in the church and its growth. Active in the Masons and Shriners, American Legion, and one of the original founders of the American Automobile Association, Mott thrived on challenges.  He had several hobbies, including horses, tennis, yachting, fishing and photography. He belonged to the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, near his residence "Parparet," in Somerset Bridge, Bermuda.

Several magazines and newspapers carried biographical sketches of Charles Stewart Mott, and a biography, Foundation for Living, was written by Clarence H. Young.

In addition to his career as a General Motors executive, C. S. Mott was active in many other businesses and organizations. His wise counsel and guidance was widely sought, and he often served on boards of directors and held offices in numerous organizations, including
