Assessment Summary for 2006-2007:

Biology student outcomes assessed in the 2006-2007 academic year can be divided into early curricular outcomes and late curricular outcomes. The early curricular outcomes focused on key skills and abilities referred to as Mastery Skills. The Mastery Skills, ideally achieved by the end of a student’s sophomore year, can be grouped into three categories: 1) basic applied math and statistics; 2) use and understanding of graphs; and 3) basic laboratory techniques. Based on assessment of Mastery Skills, the department plans to strengthen the foundational curriculum in the areas of basic applied math and statistics as well as in basic laboratory skills. The late curricular outcomes, measured near the end of a student’s undergraduate education, this year were assessed by student performance on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC). Based on student achievement on the MTTC, our biology curriculum provides the vast majority of our graduates with a substantial breadth and depth in biology.
