Amanda Smith, MA, LLP

Campus Counselor

As a Campus Counselor, Amanda provides individual, couples, and group psychotherapy for currently enrolled students. She conducts outreach activities for the campus community, provides consultation services for faculty and staff, and provides students with psychological screening services. In addition to her service within CAPS, she is also Adjunct Lecturer in the Psychology Department and Department of Public Health and Health Sciences here at UM-Flint.

Amanda takes an eclectic approach to psychotherapy, with elements of cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and client-centered approaches. She has worked for UM-Flint as a counselor since Fall 2008. Prior to that, she was clinical staff on a research project using motivational interviewing as an intervention for substance abusing adults. She has also worked at VA Medical Centers in Ann Arbor and Washington DC, which has allowed her to gain understanding of the specific issues veterans face. Much of that experience involved specializing in neuropsychological evaluations within the veteran population.

As a campus counselor, Amanda enjoys providing the support college students need to reach their goals and make important personal progress in their lives. She believes that college is a time of transition and personal change. Her role as a counselor for students has allowed her the pleasure of making that transition a positive one for many students.

Amanda resides in Flint with her husband and their family. She enjoys gardening, camping, and biking during the summer months. During the winter, it’s family game nights, cards, and karaoke to pass the time.
