The CAS Opportunity Fund

Generous support of the CAS Opportunity Fund allows the College of Arts and Sciences at UM-Flint to fund research projects, travel, professional development, and more for our faculty, staff, and students.

In 2017, the first batch of funds released helped fund:

  • travel across the country for internships
  • attendance and presentations at professional conferences
  • new lab equipment
  • research projects
  • travel to academic competitions

The funding amount for each project isn't large, but the difference it can make is immeasurable.

Erin Sack: Anthropology Field School in Ireland

Thanks to donor funding and support from her faculty, Erin Sack, a UM-Flint Anthropology student, spent part of her senior summer at a field school in Ireland. While digging in 10th-century ruins, she turned classroom theory into practice and confirmed the choice of archaeology as her perfect career path.

Quill N: Internship at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival

Quill, a Theatre major, was presented with the unique opportunity to travel to Colorado and spend 15 weeks working in the costume shop of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. While there, Quill gained professional experience while helping to create the Roman armor, crowns, leather work, and jewelry needed for the productions.

Writing Center Research

Faculty and staff of the Marian E. Wright Writing Center will present original research to their peers at an international conference. Their work will not only help UM-Flint students, it will impact the work done by writing centers across the nation's campuses.
