University of Michigan Flint

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences Development page, from DJ Trela, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

In April 2005 The University kicked off our Capital Campaign which has already reached over two-thirds of our $30m goal. The largest Campaign priority is to raise funds for Scholarships supporting our students' dreams of higher education. Through the generosity of our graduates, faculty, staff and friends, the College has endowed several scholarships and received additional one-time funds to support our students. Thanks to this generosity, we have additional awards in biology, physics, earth and resource science, theatre, the Honors program, public administration, and other areas. On behalf of the College, I thank those of you who have contributed to our students' success, and I invite all of you to consider such an investment.

The Campaign also seeks support in other areas: upgraded classrooms and state of the art equipment, whether it be a snare drum for music students or an electron microscope for chemists. To maintain and improve an outstanding faculty, we seek support for their research. To give our students the kind of unique experience that qualifies them for graduate school or a professional career, we also seek support for undergraduate research projects. And in fulfillment of our obligations as a public university, we seek support for community outreach and other forms of engaged, enlightened citizenship.

The College's Dean's Advisory Board (DAB) and our new Fine Arts Advisory Board are also making great strides, supporting our outreach initiatives, contacting our friends throughout the community and across the country. It has been my great pleasure during my own travels to meet graduates now living in Florida; California; Chicago; Washington, D.C.; New York City; and even in Ann Arbor! All have marvelous stories to tell about their time at UM-Flint--about how this place valued and nurtured them, and made a profound difference in their lives.

These graduates tell me how well the College has armed them with the intellectual tools that have made them both productive citizens and successful in their chosen professions. It is common to hear biology or chemistry graduates, now in medical or dental school, tell me how well UM-Flint prepared them for their graduate work. I hear similar stories from graduates in every discipline. Each story makes me proud to lead the distinguished faculty of this fine College. I would be delighted to hear your UM-Flint story, and also share with you our plans for the future, and the ways you might help in shaping that future.
