Registration deadline: Applications are due Friday, November 6th, 2009 (5:00p.m.)

Purpose:
Join other students, faculty and staff around the country who make a difference by volunteering over spring break! The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Program exposes students to complex social and cultural issues through community visits, experiential learning, direct service, group discussion, readings, and reflection activities. The program's vision is to transform students into advocates of social change on issues affecting our communities.

Description:
Site leaders and Board Members are important members of the Alterative Spring Break (ASB) team. They are responsible for selecting and guiding their groups in education, reflection, and fundraising throughout the year, and during the spring break trip. Site leaders and Board Members must attend a meeting in lateNovember and bi-weekly/weekly Education & Training meetings together to develop leadership skills that will help them best facilitate a positive and educational group experience. Successful Site Leaders optimally have previous experience with ASB as a participant, but ASB experience is not mandatory. Note: All ASB Site Leader and Board Member hours will count toward your Commitment to Service (CTS) Program community service transcripts

To Apply:
Please read the ASB Site Leader and Board Member Responsibilities carefully and consider the commitment involved. Be assured that Alternative Spring Break is absolutely dependent on the hard work, ideas, and energy of the students. If you care about issues in the community, are committed to student involvement in those issues, and want to be a leader in providing positive community experiences for others then this is for you! Please note, if you would like to be a Site Leader and a Board member please fill out both applications.

Interviews:
Interviews will be arranged for a time in Mid November 2009 at 1001 Northbank Center, across Harrison Street from the William S. White Building. If selected, please plan on attending the mandatory orientation meeting in late November 2009.

Commitment to Service (CTS)

The Commitment to Service (CTS) program offers distinguished honors for UM-Flint students who complete and document at least 300 hours of service during their academic career at UM-Flint and submit a two-page final reflection essay prior to graduation. Students who successfully complete this program receive an honor cord to wear at graduation, a letter of recognition from the Chancellor, a transcript of submitted volunteer hours, and an award certificate. These honors help graduates build their portfolios and set themselves apart from other candidates for jobs and graduate school!

Service activities should meet a recognized community need through a non-profit agency, group or school. Service projects may be completed as part of a course, a university sponsored community service program, a student organization/club, or through a student's own initiative.  All allowable hours must be documented on the Community Service Learning Transcript Forms provided by CCE.  All hours must be submitted by the last day of the semester in which they occurred. Please note that most volunteer hours can be double-counted for the CTS and MSS programs!

Sign up for CTS by Friday, May 29th to receive a free gift! For more information about this program or how to join, please contact Gary Ashley at (810) 424-5458 or gaashley@umflint.edu.
