We will
soon come to the end of another calendar year - 2009. It is
always good at the end of the year (whether calendar or
academic or both) to reflect on accomplishments and successes,
so I asked a few colleagues to give me a "Top Ten" list for
2009. I've picked from these lists based on a couple of
criteria: first, the item listed must actually have been
implemented, not just planned; second, the item must have
broad significance and be focused on our mission; third, the
item must have been completed in the 2009 calendar year. The
items are not listed in order of importance (except for item
1).
1. The Self-Study report and subsequent visit of
the Higher Learning Commission peer review team were both
completed successfully. The visit was not only successful but
was affirming of what we do here at UM-Flint.
2. Three
new members joined the campus leadership team: Barbara
Kornblau, Mary Jo Finney, and Scott Bertschy. Welcome to them
all! They will be a great asset to the team as we move ahead
strategically.
3. New academic programs were
implemented: Doctor of Nursing Practice; transitional- Doctor
of Physical Therapy; joint BS/MS degrees in Chemistry and
Biochemistry; MA in Art Administration.
4. Our
"Community One" program won the Education and Government Award
from the Michigan Minority Business Development Council
(beating out MSU and Wayne State). Also our School of
Management was ranked highly in several business journals.
5. A new student organization center was established,
giving our students a place they can call their own! Campus
life continues to thrive as the number of recognized student
organizations topped 100!
6. Once again, we achieved
record enrollment, bringing us even closer to our goal of
8,000 students by Fall 2010.
7. A new program to
support our student veterans was initiated, and in November, a
Student Veterans Center was established.
8. Our
external grant applications exceeded $20 million.
9.
Our residence program completed its first year at the end of
the 2009 summer with success.
10. Your choice. Select
an area of accomplishment not mentioned.

*COMPETE*
I am pleased to note
that the Business Week part-time MBA rankings have just been
published. Our MBA program was ranked in the top 10 in the
Midwest. Congratulations to our School of Management
colleagues!

*CONVENE*
On December 10, the Center for Michigan will conduct of public
forum on campus to discuss what it will take to transform
Michigan in the future. Offer your opinions on what can be
done to ensure a brighter future for Michigan from 11am - 1pm
in the Kiva.

*CONNECT* On November 18th, a
group of staff and administrators convened with the brother of
Kappa Sigma for a very enjoyable dinner at their house. It was
a wonderful opportunity to spend time with this group of young
men and learn about their success.
