For
those of us who are part of the Higher Learning Commission's
region and who receive ten-year re-accreditation, the
beginning of a new ten-year cycle is an opportunity to write a
new chapter in our history. We begin that process now, as we
initiate a new strategic planning exercise. That exercise will
allow us to chart our course for the future and will help us
answer questions such as: how big should we be? What kind of
students should we recruit who have the greatest chance of
success?
Are there ways to build on our outstanding record of teaching
and learning? What opportunities do
we have for revenue enhancement? Are there steps we should
take to generate additional savings? How can we enhance
research, scholarship, and creativity? With our increasingly
residential student body, how can we enhance the student life
experience for all students? How
can we develop our faculty, staff and administrators so that
they are prepared for a constantly-changing future that is
increasingly unpredictable? While I am
not a big fan of New Year's resolutions, I do always try to
focus on a "To Do" list for the year ahead, both personally
and for the campus. The year 2010 promises to be an
extraordinary busy one for our campus. Importantly and at the
top of our list, we will undertake a revision of our Strategic
Plan as indicated above. We will also engage in a Master Plan
review to update the plan developed a number of years ago. By
the summer we will have added three new members to our campus
leadership team: a Provost, Director of research, and Director
of the Thompson Center. Our academic affairs colleagues will
be implementing a new general education program, while our
colleagues in student affairs will be organizing a club sports
program for the campus. I will be searching for new members to
serve on the Chancellor's Advisory Board. Barnes & Noble
will be undertaking a major renovation of our campus
bookstore. The list goes on and
on......... I'm sure there are many more
items on this "To Do" list, a number of which are yet to be
determined but that will emerge as the year progresses. All of
these endeavors help us move forward in a strategic way as a
campus, even in the midst of challenging times. Together we
can all demonstrate our dedication to being "leaders and best"
in every way.

*COMPETE*
We have just learned
that Lori Vedder, Director of Financial Aid, has been elected
to the Presidency of the Michigan Student Financial Aid
Association. Lori will serve as president-elect for one
year and then president for the next year. Congratulations to
Lori!

*CONVENE*
On January 19, our campus will host the annual "Town-Gown"
dinner with our colleagues from the city and county
administrations. They will be joining our campus executive
leadership team to talk informally about ways that we can
partner together to bring success to our community. It will be
an excellent opportunity to get to know one another
better.
|
*CONNECT* On January 6, we held
our first UM-Flint "Census Count" meeting. As you know, April
1, 2010 is Census Day. It is very important that we connect with everyone who
should be counted. We will be sponsoring a number of
activities in the next few months leading up to Census Day so
that everyone will be aware of this important milestone. Stay
tuned!
