March and April have been special
months for the celebration of student success. At long last
our Chamber Singers, music faculty, and I were able to travel
to the Pentagon to participate in the African-American History
Month Celebration that had originally been planned for
February. Our students did an outstanding job and represented
us very well. I was pleased that they had several chances to
take tours around Washington D.C. as well as to participate in
the ceremony. I was honored to be included in the luncheon (in
the Secretary of the Army's private dining room) along with
the three remaining members of the 555th Parachute Infantry
Battalion (the "Triple Nickels"). What a great moment in
history for these three gentlemen and all those who honored
them. Personally, I had a great trip (with no airline snafus
(how rare!)) and even got to have dinner with one of my
cousins who lives in the area. My thanks again to all who
supported this effort, especially alumni Drs. Pane and
Boucree. As a footnote, a gentleman who had attended the
event (a WWII veteran who lives in Fenton) arrived at Gabriela
Hristova's office last week to say "I want to take those
students to lunch." What a small world!
 The same
Chamber Singers, as well as the University Chorale, presented
a wonderfully rich, diverse vocal arts concert on April 11.
The program, entitled "A Musical Journey Through the World,"
was about as challenging and as globally diverse as anyone
could imagine, including selections from the Krao tribe of
Brazil, a Kenyan religious song, New Zealand, Australia,
Argentina, Cuba, Germany, Italy, Laos, Canada's first nations,
and the U.S. What a great example of diversity in the
classroom and beyond. On April 10
Dr. Sekelsky and I attended Michigan Campus Compact's Awards
Celebration in East Lansing. Eleven of our students received
awards and one student received the Outstanding Community
Impact Award (one of only five out of a nominee pool of
900!) Finally, many of us attended
the 25th Anniversary President's Ball, celebrating the success
of numerous student awardees in an outstanding,
student-produced event. All in all, it's been a great time to
celebrate all of our "leaders and best."

*CONVENE*
On
April 1, we convened
at Critical Issues where Christopher Paul Curtis, noted author
and current Winegarden Professor, was our speaker. Christopher
has been a really constant and valued presence on campus all
year long, and I hope we can figure out a way to keep him with
us in the coming year. He is a wonderful talent and a real
inspiration to all!

*CONNECT* In speaking to a
Rotary Club in the region this week, I noted that of the 30+
attendees, seven were our alumni, two had a total of five
children who were alumni, and two were parents of prospective
students. Every week, we uncover more and more of our connections. Stay tuned to
hear about our alumni
volunteers.
