The
last week of April and first week of May have been full of
events related to Commencement-- honors and award ceremonies,
dinners, and other celebrations of student achievement. The
culminating event, of course, was our graduation ceremony.
This year, the University's largest graduating class attended
the event- 620 students. It was a great day for our
campus! Commencement is always a
time for celebration, and this year the event was enhanced by
the presence of one of our new "signature" alumni
groups-- the "Chancellor's Commencement Corps" (CCC). This
dedicated group of volunteers, some of whom are pictured
below, spent their Sunday (in several different shifts during
the day) setting up a new Alumni Relations booth, taking
photos of graduates and their families in front of our new
block M backdrops, answering questions, and signing up
graduates for the Alumni Association. What a great way for our
alumni to stay involved. I thank them for their enthusiasm and
dedication.

Chancellor's Commencement Corps
These alumni join another
signature group, the Alumni Admissions Ambassadors, in
demonstrating on-going commitment as volunteers for the
University and I salute both of these groups for their
service.

*COMPETE*
The Chancellor's Advisory Committee for
Budget and Strategic Planning will convene for its annual
retreat on May 13. Our most important topic of discussion,
besides our budget development, will be our strategic planning
effort that will be initiated this summer (with the formal
launch to take place when the semester begins in the fall).
This process should allow us to develop strategies to continue
to be successful and maintain a "leaders and best" position in
the ever-more competitive
world of higher education. Students have many choices
about where they attend college, and we want to be ahead of
our peers in attracting and graduating the best talent we can
find. This planning process should be an energizing and
engaging challenge for us all as we chart our future. Stay
tuned!

*CONVENE*
On
May 21 and 22 our campus will host the Students Veterans
Midwest Conference. Somewhere between 250 and 300 students
from around the Midwest will convene for two days of
meetings, presentations, and social opportunities. I am
looking forward to welcoming them to campus and asking them to
spread the word about
UM-Flint.

*CONNECT* On May 17 I will
be attending a Business Leaders for Michigan summit in
Lansing. This meeting will bring together business and
community leaders from across the state and candidates running
for office to discuss how to turn our state around. I look
forward to connecting
with a variety of stakeholders and especially with Steve
Goldsmith, former Mayor of Indianapolis and colleague of mine
who is now a professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. Small
world!
