Once again, we
are off to a great start for our new academic year. This year,
we started classes one week later than in the past, so we are
just now receiving our official enrollment statistics. The
results of everyone's hard work are evident; once again, we
have exceeded our enrollment goals! Even in our very
challenged economy, students are enrolling with us,
recognizing that a baccalaurate or graduate education is keys
to success in the future. This year promises
to be even busier than last. Our most important endeavor, of
course, is to successfully complete the Higher Learning
Commission's visit and any subsequent follow-up requirements
that will take place this fall. We will also be initiating a
new strategic planning process to update and revise as
necessary our 2005-2010 plan. I expect to be inviting
committee members to serve within the next month, and we are
already assembling documents for them to review as they
develop revisions to the plan. Our third
important endeavor this fall is to complete the preliminary
work in the search for a new Provost. The search committee and
our consultants Dennis Barden and Oliver Tomlin are hard at
work developing all of the information needed to recruit
outstanding candidates. During the fall
semester, there are many oppurtunities to engage with
students, faculty, staff and often the community for a variety
of purposes. I encourage everyone to try to attend as many of
our campus events as you can fit into your schedule. In these
difficult times, our support for one another is critical to
our success. We all lead very busy lives, to be sure, but I
hope we'll all take the time to be fully engaged with our
campus community. Enjoy the fall!

*COMPETE*
The search for leaders
is always a competitive process. In
spite of the challenging economy, the competition for the "leaders
and best" requires diligence and effort. We have successfully
recruited three new members of the leadership team: Scott
Bertschy(Executive Director of Development and Alumni
Relations), Barbara Kornblau (Dean of School of Health
Professions and Studies) and Mary Jo Finney (Dean of School of
Education and Human Services). We welcome them to their new
roles, and also thank Interim Provost Vahid Lotfi and Interim
Dean of Graduate Studies Chris Waters for being willing to
assume new roles and responsibilities.

*CONVENE* On
September 18, our campus played host to a congressional
delegation as they conducted a field hearing on H.R. 1578
("Fast Track to College Act of 2009"). Joining us for the day
were Congressman Dale Kildee (D, Michigan), Ruben Hinojosa (D.
Texas), Donald Payne (D, New Jersey), and Mazie Hirono (D,
Hawaii).

*CONNECT* This month, the
administrators and staff who oversee club sports programs on
all three U-M campuses connected with one another
in Flint to discuss enhancements to this important athletic
endeavor. On our campus, we want to encourage participation in
the club sports programs in place but also to promote
spectator attendance. Once again, the Chancellor's Office will
be sponsoring a Faculty-Staff Hockey Night either in the fall
or winter, depending on the U-M Hockey Club's schedule. Stay
tuned to BlueNotes for more information in
October.
