Job Description

University of Michigan-Flint
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Flint, MI

In a remarkably short period of time, the University of Michigan-Flint has achieved progressive growth! Guided by a strategic plan, Blue Ribbon Commission report for Academic Affairs, and supported by the combined energy and enthusiasm of its faculty, students, community, and leadership, the University has undergone a metamorphosis. It has built its first residence hall, increased enrollments, expanded its student recruitment base, empowered its academic units and deans to innovate, and increased its academic reputation in and beyond the State of Michigan.

To continue, indeed to accelerate, the pace of its evolution, the University seeks an outstanding and progressive academic leader to serve as its next provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Reporting to the chancellor and serving as the institution's chief academic officer, the provost will play a central role in crafting and executing the University's next strategic plan, thereby making an historic contribution to the institution.

One of three campuses of the University of Michigan, UM-Flint's development in recent years has paralleled that of its host city. Flint is in the midst of a similarly profound transformation. Although the city is best known as the birthplace of General Motors, shifts in industry have caused the area to become better known for its educational opportunities, cultural centers, medical facilities, shopping centers, and recreational activities. Visitors who return to the city after several years are amazed at the ongoing transformation, and UM-Flint has played a central role in the progress the city has made.

The University's new provost, therefore, will contribute not only to the continuing development of an outstanding educational institution but to the renewal of the city and the region itself. Accomplishing this will require a leader with unimpeachable academic credentials, an entrepreneurial spirit, a compelling leadership style that inspires followership, and a track record for getting things done.

Review of credentials is under way and will continue until an appointment is made. For fullest consideration, materials should be submitted no later than November 10, 2009. Nominations, expressions of interest, and applications (including a resume and a cover letter) should be submitted, in confidence, via email to UMFlintProvost@wittkieffer.com.
