UM-Flint Cancer Research Symposium

Friday, October 27
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
MSB 396

In “Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted”, Suleika Jaouad is diagnosed with and receives treatment for acute myeloid leukemia. In an effort to raise awareness of cancer research on campus and highlight the work UM-Flint faculty and students are conducting on this important topic, The Common Read committee is hosting a Cancer Research Symposium.

On Friday, October 27 at 11 a.m. in the Murchie Science Building Expansion (MSB 396), there will be a series of lightning talks showcasing cancer-related research of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students on campus. All talks will be geared toward a general audience, The Common Read committee invites you to attend.

Faculty and students interested in presenting, please fill out the linked Google Form below to submit a title and short abstract for your presentation. The form includes an option for presenters to choose a talk (10 minutes for faculty or 5-minute lightning talks for students) or poster format. All student presenters will be provided a $50 honoraria.

The 100 Day Project

Thursday, November 9
2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Clint’s Cafe, UCEN

While receiving treatment, Jaouad and her family commit to work on something for 100 days straight in the midst of a life-threatening illness and long recovery. For your 100-Day Project, pick something that you want to focus on, like painting, journaling, poetry, designing, knitting, embroidery, or creative writing. It doesn’t have to be artistic in nature. You could even make a commitment to using a planner or working on a business plan.

On Thursday, November 9, at 2:30 p.m. in Clint’s Cafe, 3rd-floor UCEN, there will be a special event showcasing the 100 Day Projects of students. Even if you don’t have the full 100 days done by then, The Common Read committee invites you to share your work.

Due to limited capacity, this event requires pre-registration.

Please reach out to Stephanie Vidaillet Gelderloos for more information.
