Communication Studies at UM-Flint

No shame in asking; we get it all the time.
What can I do with a Communication Studies degree?

Some majors are designed for students with specific careers in mind. But lots of students may not know quite yet what their future holds. What they do know is that whatever they end up doing after graduation, they are going to need to know how to communicate effectively. Our majors tend to love interacting with people, or want to get better at it. In any business or organization, some people work behind the scenes, and some work with the public. A Communication Studies degree gives you the best training to be that public face.

In a recent survey, 93% percent of employers said your specific major is not as important as your “capacity to think critically, communicate clearly and solve complex problems.” These are exactly the skills a Communication Studies degree helps you develop. No one can tell what your chosen field will look like in 5 or 10 years. But communication skills last a lifetime.

The better question is, what can’t you do with a degree in Communication Studies?

What do Communication Studies majors learn?

A UM-Flint Communication Studies degree is diverse. With three emphasis areas to choose from, you can focus on courses related specifically to the business world, the media industry, or explore human communication for the widest flexibility.

All Communication Studies majors complete core courses focused on developing speaking and writing skills, mastering essential theories of how human communication works, and learning how to evaluate research. All Communication Studies majors also complete our capstone course that focuses on getting you ready for the job hunt through rehearsal interviewing, resume writing, and helping you find the right way to sell yourself to employers.

One thing those employers most value in a job seeker is an internship. That’s why all Communication Studies students are required to complete one. You will gain real world experience to complement your classroom studies. As a major, you will learn more about how internships in Communication Studies at UM-Flint work, and why it is so important for students to have one.

Communication Studies students also have many opportunities to engage with the community. Many of our courses connect students with real world clients, translating theory into actual practice. For examples of some of these student projects and the research being generated by Communication Studies faculty, visit our Research & Engagement page.
