Lois Matz Rosen, Ph.D., professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Michigan-Flint, retired from active faculty status on May 31, 2003, after an exceptionally stellar career.

Professor Rosen received her B.A. degree in English and her Ed.M. in secondary education from Temple University in 1962 and 1964, respectively, and her Ph.D. in English from Michigan State University in 1983.  She joined the UM-Flint faculty in 1984 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1988 and professor in 1998.

Professor Rosen wore two hats during most of her career, that of instructor and that of a director.  As an instructor, she designed and taught the department’s three English methods courses, which led to her establishing and directing the Flint Area Writing Project from 1987-1994, an intensive summer workshop for practicing teachers.  She also consulted and presented workshops on K-12 writing and Writing Across the Curriculum in most of the Genesee County school districts.

As a director in the writing program and writing center from 1984-1999, she was directly instrumental in developing the department’s Marian E. Wright Writing Center, a computer-equipped writing classroom known and used campus.

Professor Rosen was also chair of the Provost’s Task Force on Teaching in 1996-97, resulting in the establishment of the Thompson Center for Learning and Teaching.  She subsequently became director of the center from 1998 to 2003, providing faculty teaching support, resources, and programs that are now an integral part of UM-Flint’s campus community.  In addition to her demanding roles, her scholarly work did not diminish.  She wrote numerous articles, presented workshops at all levels; one of her articles has been anthologized in four edited volumes for teachers, and she has co-authored two books.
