Description:  The program in Social Studies is the integrated study of the social sciences, which prepares students to teach the study of people and their economic, social, and political institutions in their historical and geographic context.  Social Studies provides a coordinated, systematic study drawing upon the disciplines of economics, geography, history, and political science, as well as other social sciences, and appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of Social Studies is to help people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.


Program Requirements:

Area Options: 
One of the two required area options must be in a foreign language.

Requirements:
Thirty-nine credits, consisting of 12 credits from one of the disciplines below and 9 credits from each of the other three:
A. Economics. ECN 201, 202; additional courses in economics at or above 300-level selected in consultation with an   Economics Department advisor.
B. Geography. GEO/INT 116; additional courses selected from GEO 115, 216, 285.
C. History. HIS 220, 221; additional courses in non-U.S. history.
D. Political Science. POL 190, 120; additional courses in political science. (POL 230, 311, 345, 380 recommended).

“Secondary Education Teacher's Certificate Programs” printed in the Department of Education section of this Catalog
