U-M President Mary Sue Coleman, in an address to the campus community, stated that the University of Michigan remains fully committed to diversity. The Women’s Educational Center plans to pursue with enthusiasm our programs that contribute to a diverse learning environment. President Coleman also questioned the legality of Proposal 2 and said she would consider legal options to defend diversity at the University. The Women's Educational Center provides information and support to women students, staff and faculty at the University of Michigan-Flint. Our primary purpose is to encourage women to realize their educational and personal goals.
Mission Statement
The University of Michigan-Flint Women’s Educational Center is dedicated to supporting the achievement, well-being, and active participation of diverse women students, staff and faculty at UM-Flint. In addition, it serves as an educational resource for women in the geographic region.
The Women’s Educational Center works collaboratively with the UM-Flint University and community to:
- empower women by providing resources, services, programs, and research that address a diverse range of needs, interests, and concerns;
- support women’s participation in the life of the university, regional, national and global communities;
- recognize and celebrate the multiple realities of women’s lives;
- advocate for expansion of educational and work opportunities available to women;
- promote equality by challenging imbalances of power based on gender and other social factors, such as race, class, sexual orientation, and age, within and beyond the university.

The art gallery will be filled with works of art created by students, faculty, and staff. The posters created by students for the annual Women’s History Month poster contest will also be on display. Approximately sixty women graduates were interviewed for this short documentary film that addresses the challenges and triumphs of women students at the University of Michigan-Flint. The idea of doing a project for the 50th anniversary of UM-Flint that focuses on women was initially conceived by a group of students and then developed into a special topics course, Gender, Race, & Class: Alumnae of the University of Michigan-Flint, taught by Dr. Heather Laube during spring 2005.Women Leaders in Our Community Panel Presentation

In celebration of International Women’s Day, women in leadership positions in the Flint area will discuss their career and life choices, and the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. Prepare to be inspired!!

Do you know what your color is? What are your leadership preferences? Would you like to find out?
Join us for this fun and interactive program to learn more about your leadership potential, how to be an effective team player, and how to work in diverse groups—all important skills for success in a global economy. For 26 years, True Colors, a nationally recognized program, has been utilized by universities, school districts and corporations to teach people how to discover their greatest strengths and understand the strengths of others.

Women from the campus and community are invited to explore a variety of local vendors, and the services offered by community and university organizations. Participants may attend classes including cardio kickboxing, Latin dance, Pilates, and/or get a one-minute massage. Snacks and give-aways will also be available. Sing a song, read a poem, tell a story, or play a tune as we celebrate Women’s History Month. This event will feature spoken word artist and UM-Flint alumna, Liza Garza. Garza just recently released her first CD BloomBeautiful and is author of the book You Never Knew Until I Spoke. Signed copies will be available for purchase. Bring some friends! Light refreshments will be served.The Vagina Monologues— They’re Back!
Wednesday, March 21 6:00 p.m. — 8:00 p.m. Kiva, UCEN
Join us for a production of Eve Ensler’s internationally acclaimed play, The Vagina Monologues. The monologues will be narrated by students, faculty, and staff of UM-Flint. Ensler’s Monologues have been performed around the world in an effort to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. Donations will be collected to benefit the YWCA Safe House. The subject matter and language may not be suitable for children.
