Bequest Gift from Dr. Dorothea E. Wyatt Benefits UM-Flint History Program

Dr. Dorothea Wyatt, through a generous estate gift, has continued her legacy of leadership and commitment to the University of Michigan-Flint and the History program.  Through Dr. Wyatt’s foresight and generosity in making this transformative gift, the UM-Flint History program will transcend to new levels of excellence.  This gift was officially announced during a press conference on March 13, 2008 at the UM-Flint campus.

In 1956, Dr. Wyatt became one of the original ”founding” faculty members of Flint College, University of Michigan.  Five years later, she was promoted to full professor. She was named the first chairperson of the Department of History, and in 1974, she was named the first recipient of The University of Michigan-Flint Outstanding Professorship Award.

Dorothea Wyatt enhanced her reputation as a teacher through her research.  Her publications include Julia Tutwiler and Social Progress in Alabama, and she also served as a Contributing Editor to the Encyclopedia Britannica.  In addition to her activity within the University, she brought her expertise and energy to the Flint community in a number of capacities:  as a member in the American Association of University Women, Zonta Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

On June 30, 1975, after a most productive career as teacher, advisor, and scholar, she retired from The University of Michigan-Flint with the status of Professor Emerita.

The University of Michigan-Flint Dorothea E. Wyatt Award was established in 1988 and was named in honor of Dr. Wyatt.  Candidates for this award are members of the campus community who are leaders in promoting equity and opportunities for women and who are involved in the creation or implementation of programs to better the status of women.

Dr. Wyatt passed away July 31, 2007 at the age of 98.

Her love of the University and its students was shown by the bequest that she designated to improve and enhance the History program. At the time the University was notified of the gift, the market value was estimated at approximately $6 million.

Prottengeiers

Maurice “Bud” and Marian Prottengeier Send Local Youth to Camp

Established by a generous gift from Maurice “Bud” and Marian Prottengeier, the Mr. Bud and Mrs. Bud Camp Summer Fun Scholarship provides summer camp experiences for low-income youth attending South Bendle Elementary School and Carpenter Road Elementary School.  The Camp Summer Fun Program, coordinated by the University of Michigan-Flint Recreation Center, provides engaging and memorable opportunities for local children to participate in art, science, problem-solving, dance, and drama.

Bud Prottengeier has volunteered countless hours reading to the children of the South Bendle and Carpenter Road Elementary Schools and these students, in turn, affectionately refer to him as “Mr. Bud.”  Bud and Marian, with encouragement from their family, established this endowed fund to ensure these students, and those that follow, will have the opportunity to experience the University of Michigan-Flint Recreation Center’s day camp.

The Honorable Archie L. Hayman

Archie L. Hayman Award Provides Support for EOI Programming

The Honorable Archie L. Hayman, through a generous pledged gift, has established the Archie L. Hayman Award to support student programming in the University of Michigan-Flint Office of Educational Opportunity Initiatives.  This expendable fund will directly impact the Educational Opportunity Initiatives Transitions and Support Services, the Transitions Program, the Bridges to Success Program, and the Challenge Program.  These programs were created to enhance the educational experiences of UM-Flint students, and Judge Hayman’s support will allow for even more students to participate in the services offered through EOI.

Judge Hayman, a 1981 alumnus of the University of Michigan-Flint School of Management and former scholarship recipient, understands the financial challenges faced by college students.  His generosity will provide the gift of education for students from a variety of backgrounds who, despite their differences, will be united in the goal to pursue a college education.

In addition to completing his baccalaureate degree at UM-Flint, Judge Hayman also attended Mott Community College and obtained a Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law.  He currently serves as the Chief Judge for the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court of Genesee County and has been involved with many community organizations including the Flint Neighborhood Coalition, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America, and the Salvation Army.  Judge Hayman is a member of the Vernon Chapel AME Church.

Zicks

Zicks Create Endowed Scholarship to Honor Parents

David Zick is a man who truly believes in giving back.  As a Physics student at UM-Flint, he relied upon the generosity of others to complete his studies and he has now, once again, returned that generosity.  Together with his wife, Francine, David has established a new scholarship to help students in need.  The William and Margaret Zick scholarship, named in honor of his parents, is an endowed fund that will provide support for tuition, books, or housing.

This gift marks the first endowed scholarship for student housing.

“We are incredibly grateful that the Zicks have, once again, seen a need on our campus and jumped to fill it” said Kristen Skivington, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement.  This marks the sixth scholarship or fund the couple has established to benefit our campus.

William and Margaret Zick raised thirteen children.  Despite the financial hurdles involved in raising such a large family, they instilled a strong sense of the value of education and the importance of community responsibility to their sons and daughters.  David and all of his siblings attended the University of Michigan (many at the Flint campus, others in Ann Arbor) for at least some of their college education, all together earning eleven Michigan degrees.
