Elementary Education Degree Requirements
Area Options: Students choose any two area options.
Honors Program in Elementary Education Area Options: One of the two required area options must be in a foreign language, as stated in the University Honors Scholar Program.
- Completion of the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan-Flint.
- Completion of 128 credits, at least 80 of which must be non-education courses, including:
- A course in United States history: HIS 220, 221 are recommended. (See the Education Department office or website for the complete list of acceptable courses.)
- PSY 100
- MTH 115
- SCI 125 or 126
- A course in the history or culture of American minorities: AFA/SOC 270; AFA/EDU/URB 331; AFA/HIS 334; ENG 213, 374; MAS/EDU/PUB EDE 432. (This list is subject to change. See the Education Department office or website for the current list of acceptable courses.)
- A course in the study of the English language: ENG/LIN 200, 244, EDE 469, 409; LIN 346; LIN/ANT 290, EDR 343; LIN/COM 284; LIN/ENG 351. See Courses that Fulfill the General Language Requirement
- A major and a minor, or three minors
- A course in United States history: HIS 220, 221 are recommended. (See the Education Department office or website for the complete list of acceptable courses.)
- Completion of the following courses in professional education, to be taken in the student's third and fourth years:
- EDE 300, EDE 302, EDE 360, EDR 344, EDR 343, EDM 341, EDE 469, EDE 499, (EDT 401, 423 or EDT 420), EDR 445
- Four courses from: EDU 331, EDE 344, EDE 343, 356, EDE 433, EDE 432, EDE 433, EDR 430, EDR 435, EDR 437, EDR 441, EDE 402
- Completion of the requirements in the section "General Requirements for Teacher Certification."
Honors Program in Elementary Education Area Options: One of the two required area options must be in a foreign language, as stated in the University Honors Scholar Program.
- Completion of all requirements of the elementary education Bachelor of Science program, to include:
- EDU 391 (3 credits) and 394 (1 credit)
- An education course in the EDE 433 series taken with consent of the Honors Faculty Advisor.
- EDU 495 and 496, Honors Thesis I and II
- All requirements of the University Honors Scholar Program
Prospective Honors Program students are urged to acquaint themselves as early as possible with the requirements above as well as with the particular procedures for acceptance into the Education Department's Honors Program. See the Honors Program Director for this information.
