This week has been designated as Lightning Safety Awareness Week

There is no place outside safe when storms are in the area.  Usually victims of a lightning strike are engaged in outdoor sports or water related activities. Lightning is one of the top 3 storm-related killers in the United States.  If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. When you hear thunder, immediately move to a safe place.  Never take shelter under a tree.  The National Weather Service promotes “When thunder roars, go indoors!”. Stay there until 30 minutes AFTER you hear the last sound of thunder.

Now is the time to sign up to receive UM Flint Emergency Alerts! In order to receive these urgent notification alert massages, you may register up to three communications devices, such as text message devices, cell phones or other telephones.  You need to register a phone number where you can personally be reached in an emergency, not your department’s main telephone number.  If you have already signed up for the service, please take a few minutes to revisit this site to confirm your information.
