Grants

Grant Eligibility

To be eligible for any of the aid listed below a student must have a current FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Aid.

Grants are defined as gift aid that does not need to be repaid.  Below is a listing of grants available to Univeristy of Michigan-Flint students.

Federal Grants

Federal Pell Grant (PELL)

  • Federally Funded
  • Gift Aid
  • Must be U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Need based (EFC <=5273)
  • Undergraduate, 1st bachelor’s degree
  • Award is reduced on a prorated basis if student is not attending full time

The  following is a list of recent changes to federal regulations governing the Federal Pell Grant:

  • During 2010 and 2011, the Federal government allowed for a second Federal Pell Grant award during the Spring/Summer even if students had already utilized the maximum award amount for the academic year. Beginning in 2011/2012, there will be no second awards of Federal Pell Grants. Students will generally only have Federal Pell Grant eligibility during Spring/Summer 2012 if they have not utilized their maximum award for the 2011-2012 academic year.
  • Beginning in 2012-2013, the EFC range used in determining who may receive a Federal Pell Grant will decrease from the 2011-12 year’s level of 0 - 5273 down to 0 - 4995.

Pell Grant Award Schedule
Aid Year Award Amount EFC Range
2011-2012 $555 -$5550 0 - 5273
2012-2013 $555 - $5550 0 - 4995

  • A lifetime aggregate limit of 12 full-time semester awards will apply to 2012-13 Federal Pell Grant eligible students regardless of when the student first received a Federal Pell Grant.
  • Federal regulations state that students who are eligible to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and choose to extend their enrollment without graduating cannot continue to receive the Federal Pell Grant. Students who complete the requirements to earn a degree and continue to take undergraduate courses without accepting the degree (for a second major or minor or second degree), will have their Federal Pell Grant cancelled for any subsequent semesters as they are no longer eligible.
  • If it is reported by faculty that an undergraduate Federal Pell Grant eligible student never attended class(es), their Pell Grant will be recalculated based on their enrollment and attendance in other courses within the semester. This may cause a reduction in Pell Grant awards.
  • Federal Pell Grant will be reduced for those undergraduate Pell Grant eligible students who elect to take graduate level course-work that may potentially count toward a graduate degree.
