SAP Policy
University of Michigan – Flint, Standards of Academic Progress
Federal law establishes that all students must make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward their degree to remain eligible for financial aid. Students at the University of Michigan – Flint must meet all three of the following requirements.
Policy Effective: Fall 2006
Undergraduate Degree
- Students may receive financial aid for the first 180 hours attempted as an undergraduate.
- Transfer students will be evaluated by adding their transfer hours to their attempted undergraduate hours, allowing them to receive aid for the balance of the 180 hours.
- Students seeking a second undergraduate degree or teaching certificate are eligible to receive financial aid for 90 attempted hours.
- Students must receive a passing grade in at least 67 percent of the credit hours in which they attempt on a cumulative basis.
- Students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 by the end of the fourth semester, and maintain the 2.0 for the duration of their eligibility. This standard will be monitored and enforced as described in the Catalog regarding academic policies on academic standing. Some programs may require higher standards.
Graduate Degree
- Students may receive financial aid for the first 59 hours attempted as a graduate.
- Transfer students will be evaluated by adding their transfer hours to their attempted hours, allowing them to receive aid for the balance of the 59 hours.
- Students must receive a passing grade in at least 67 percent of the credit hours in which they attempt on a cumulative basis.
- Students must maintain a 2.0 for the duration of their eligibility.
Attempted Hours
- Attempted hours include the following credit hours.
- Successfully completed (with passing grades)
- Non-passing grades (i.e., N, F, E, I, *)
- Retakes
- Drops after the drop/add period
- Disenrollment from a semester (W) on or after the first day of class
- Grades which are changed to W through the appeal process
SAP Probation
- Students who have not completed 67% of their attempted hours at the end of the Winter Semester will be placed on probation. The probation period will consist of the following Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter Semesters.
- Students will continue to receive financial aid while on SAP probation.
- To avoid termination of all aid, students must have reached the required 67% percent completion rate by the end of the probation period.
- The status of students that have reached 67% percent completion rate will be changed to making satisfactory academic progress at the end of the probation period.
SAP Termination of Financial Aid Eligibility
- Students will be terminated from receiving financial aid if they have not reached the required 67% completion rate by the end of their probation period.
- Students completing zero hours at the end of the Winter Semester may be terminated from receiving future aid.
Reinstating Eligibility
- Student may regain eligibility by successfully achieving an overall completion rate of 67% or through an accepted appeal.
Appealing Termination of Financial Aid Eligibility
- If special circumstances prevent students from meeting the 67% completion rate or graduating within the 180 allowable hours, the termination of eligibility may be appealed to the SAP Appeals Committee.
- An appeal reviewed by the Committee does not guarantee reinstatement of financial aid.
- Appropriate circumstances include
- serious medical illness or injury
- death of an immediate family member
- change in major for exceeding hours only; most recent change in major will be considered (must document change from advisor and include all previous attempted credits that will not count toward the student’s new major including institutional and transfer credits, and graduation plan listing terms and required courses)
- significant change in employment that prevented student from attending
- Appeal forms must be submitted with supporting documentation within or prior to the semester for which funds are needed.
- Appeal forms are available online.
