Project Description: Investigating how real world community groups might embody some of the utopian energies I articulated in my paper. My thesis is that shrinking cities such as Detroit and Flint allow, and even encourage, efforts to transform what were once private property into communal spaces such as community gardens, gathering places and public art that express utopian energies not present in more controlled urban environments.
Semesters Desired: Fall 2009; Winter 2010
GSRA Position Description: GSRA will help in obtaining the data I need investigate whether or not any recent efforts in urban design and community development express the creative appropriation of what was once private space into public space that I investigate in the paper I wrote this semester. I will need help in gathering newspaper articles, transcribing interviews, and further editorial assistance.
