Project Description: Production team Dramaturg of the play Cherry Orchard; Dramaturgy/Literary Manager of the play Red Herring. The dramaturg researches and analyses script, assists director in rehearsal, writes copy for lobby displays, production program, newsletters and press releases. Creates lobby displays of research, coordinates photo documentation of rehearsal and performances.
Semesters Desired: Fall 2009; Winter 2010
GSRA Position Description: The graduate student will perform all duties associated with the position of dramaturg for one fall production and one winter production. These duties would include, but not be limited to historical research on the text, various prior productions, social and cultural conditions at the time the text was written, and research on thematic and stylistic elements pertinent to the production. Assist the director in selection of best translation. Preparation of a dramaturgical text to be used by the director to facilitate education of the actors and designers involved in the production. Educational essays to be used in programs and for the media providing historical and social perspectives on the text and its production.
Write press releases, newsletter articles and program copy. Create lobby display of dramaturgical research for audience enrichment and education. Work with director and TCP in Speech candidate to create a study guide.
Specific Day/Time Requirements: The GSRA would work in Fall 09 over the course of pre-production, production and post-production. Hours and times will vary.
Special Requirements: Understanding of the elements of theatre history and cultural history and how the two intersect to create a special space that wants to be translated on the stage. Desktop publishing skills. Careful research skills. Strong writing skills. Ability to work unsupervised.
