Development of a Physical Activity Intervention for People with Serious Mental Illness

Project Description:  People with serious mental illness have high rates of co-morbid conditions such as diabetes, kidney failure, heart and respiratory disease. A focus on wellness activities may help to decrease risk factors for these diseases. The goal of this project is to develop, implement, and test a physical activity program at a community Clubhouse for members with serious mental illness in Lapeer, Michigan. This project is in partnership with Lapeer County Community Mental Health.

Semesters Desired:  Fall 2009; Winter 2010

GSRA Position Description:  Responsibilitites will vary as the project goes forward. Initially the GSRA would assist with completion of the literature review and preparation of the proposal for IRB review. After IRB approval, the GSRA would assist with site preparation and ordering of supplies. Later, the GSRA would assist with communications between faculty and students involved in the project and club members and staff. The GSRA would eventually assist with data entry and other responsibilities as data collection progressed.

Specific Day/Time Requirements:  Variable dates and times, 6-8 hours/wk.
