Project Description:  Michigan is home to at least 54 species and subspecies of amphibians and reptiles. Since the time of the first State surveys over 100 years ago a significant and diverse collection of species observations have been documented in studies, reports, and graduate research. To date, no comprehensive effort has been made to compile these historic data in order to assess historic species diversity and distribution State-wide. These data are instrumental in assessing historical species presence and range and will aid in identifying data gaps and population trends. This novel and much overdue effort will directly benefit conservation and management of amphibians and reptiles in Michigan and aid future scientific and research needs.

Semesters Desired:  Fall 2011 AND Winter 2012

GSRA Position Description:  The primary role of the GSRA will be to compile and review historic documents and species accounts. The GSRA will catalogue various studies and historic data from various sources of work conducted throughout the State. The student will begin mapping these accounts into a GIS database. The first semester would focus on data collection and resource networking and the second semester will be more focused on data compilation and GIS mapping. The GSRA will be part of a long-term effort to collect this historical data and will help lay the ground work for future related projects.
