Project Description:  The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study is to discover African American men's lived experiences when receiving primary health care from nurse practitioners in a nurse managed clinic in an urban context. This research will be conceptualized with Leininger's Theory of Culture Care using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. The domain of inquiry for this study is African American men's views and lived experiences of recieving care from nurse practitioners in a nurse managed center. The specific aim of this study is to discover and describe the experiences of six to twelve African American men who are currently receiving care in the clinic at the Urban Health and Wellness Center (UHWC). Several qualitative enablers (tools) will be used to assist with collection and analysis of the data. NVIVO 8, a qualitative research software program, will be used to aid in data analysis. Individual interviews will be conducted and analyzed for common and diverse themes, patterns, and constructs. The findings from this study may lead to a greater understanding of African American men's experiences related to health and well being when receiving care from a nurse practitioner. The discoveries from this study are predicted to guide nursing actions and decisions with the ultimate goal of providing culturally congruent care leading to improved health, wellbeing, and beneficial lifeways for this group.
