Master of Science in Anesthesia (MS)
The University of Michigan-Flint’s School of Health Professions and Studies offers the Master of Science Degree in Anesthesia through the Department of Health Sciences and Administration in conjunction with Hurley Medical Center in Flint.
This two-year, full-time program provides registered nurses the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to enter into anesthesia practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. The MS in Anesthesia curriculum integrates clinical experience with classroom instruction.
The MS in Anesthesia program faculty are dedicated to helping students achieve full professional competency. In addition to administering anesthesia and monitoring patients during surgery, these competencies include selecting and administering pre-operative medication and anesthesia and managing post-operative recovery from anesthesia.
The program combines academic and clinical anesthesia courses taught at the University of Michigan-Flint and Hurley Medical Center.
At the completion of the program, a Master of Science in Anesthesia degree is granted by the University of Michigan-Flint. Graduates are then eligible to take the National Certification Examination. Successful completion of the exam is required to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
The program is full time and requires a time commitment that will exceed 40 hours per week; therefore, student employment is not recommended.
Curriculum
The MS in Anesthesia program is 60 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree. The program of full-time study, over 24 consecutive months, integrates academic and clinical anesthesia courses taught at Hurley Medical Center and the University of Michigan- Flint campus. Although didactic course work follows the academic calendar, the clinical practicums span the entire calendar year. Currently, clinical practicums take place at Hurley Medical Center (Flint), Genesys Regional Medical Center (Grand Blanc), Memorial Healthcare (Owosso), Covenant Healthcare (Saginaw), McLaren Regional Medical Center (Flint), Port Huron Hospital (Port Huron), St. Mary’s of Michigan (Saginaw), and Mid-Michigan Medical Center (Midland). Other sites may be added in the future.
Introduction to Nurse Anesthesia
If you have an interest in nurse anesthesia and want to know more, consider enrolling in HCR 130 - Introduction to Nurse Anesthesia. It is a 1-credit hour course that will meet every two weeks 2 evening hours at Hurley Medical Center in the Winter semester. (Winter 2012 dates are Jan. 4, Jan. 18, Feb. 1, Feb. 15, March 7, March 21, and April 4; class time is 5:00-7:00 p.m.) The course is intended to assist students and Registered Nurses in their consideration of Nurse Anesthesia as a future career.
Current University of Michigan-Flint students can register for the course during their appropriate registration period. Non-students must first apply through Undergraduate Admissions to get admitted as a non-candidate for degree in the winter semester.
