Anesthesia (MS) - Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

Admission into the Master of Science in Anesthesia program is selective. Students will be admitted to the fall semester only. Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for admission:

  1. Current, unrestricted, licensure as a Registered Nurse in Michigan or one of the United States or protectorates
  2. A bachelor's degree in nursing or an appropriate biological science from an accredited institution
  3. A minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  4. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in required prerequisite courses (see below)
  5. A minimum of one year's experience in the last five years as a registered nurse in a critical care nursing area...SICU, MICU, CCU, etc. We accept NICU (neonatal) & Emergency Department (E.R.), but applicants are expected to have a working knowledge of Swan Ganz and other advanced monitoring modalities and titration of vasopressors (These are not usually utilized in the ER or NICU)
  6. Current Certification as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider (ACLS)
  7. Current Certification as a Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider (PALS)
  8. Completion of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) - The GRE General test will be used to supplement undergraduate records and other indicators of students’ potential success in the program. The scores provide a common measure for comparing the qualifications of applicants who come from a variety of colleges and universities. We review the percentile scores so you should consider repeating if your percentile scores are low. (Please note that GRE Scores are purged from the GRE System after 5 years.)
  9. Due to the length of time that it may take international applicants to become licensed as a Registered Nurse in the United States, we will not consider applications “pending receipt of a license.”


Those seeking admission to the Master of Science in Anesthesia program must complete the following prerequisites (or their equivalents) at an accredited institution prior to regular admission to the program.

A. One course in:
       Statistics
       Fundamentals of Chemistry I (Inorganic Chemistry)
       Fundamentals of Chemistry Laboratory (strongly recommended)
       Organic Chemistry
       College Algebra (or demonstrated competence through math placement test)

and

B. Courses in:
       Human Anatomy and Physiology I and
       Human Anatomy and Physiology II and
       Microbiology Basics
or
       Organismal Biology and
       Cell Biology and
       Mammalian Physiology

Note: If your science credits are 10 years old or more, a recent repeat of Organic or Biochemistry and one course in Anatomy/Physiology is required.

 

Application Process

To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit the following by the application deadline to the Office of Graduate Programs, 251 Thompson Library, before the Program Admissions Committee will evaluate the applicant’s file:

  • Application for Graduate Admission (apply online or with a paper application)
  • Application fee (non-refundable) payable to the University of Michigan-Flint
  • A completed supplemental application to the MS in Anesthesia program
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Three letters of recommendation including one each from the dean or director of applicant’s nursing program, a present employer/supervisor, and a practicing colleague who is familiar with the applicant’s work as a registered nurse.
  • An autobiography of 500 to 1000 words describing your professional goals, experience, reason for selecting anesthesia, and future career expectations
  • GRE scores (general test) sent to the University of Michigan-Flint Institutional Code #1853
  • Copy of military discharge (if applicable)
  • Copy of current Michigan Registered Nursing License
  • Copy of current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate
  • Copy of current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certificate
  • International students must submit additional documentation.

Application Deadlines

To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit all applications materials to the Office of Graduate Programs on or before the application deadline. Application deadlines for the MS in Anesthesia program are as follows:

  • Early Review: October 1
  • Final Review: February 1
