Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Systems (MS)

The MS in Computer and Information Systems program is designed primarily for working professionals wishing to improve their skills and knowledge in computer and information technology-related fields as well as those interested in pursuing a career in this exciting and rewarding field.

The program offers two concentrations, a Computer Science Concentration and an Information Systems Concentration, as well as preparatory Fast Track to allow students from non-Computer Science backgrounds to quickly prepare themselves for the program.

  • The Computer Science Concentration is a rigorous technical program designed to provide the student with in-depth state-of-the-art knowledge in critical computer-related technologies such as Architecture, Databases, Networking, Algorithms, and Artificial Intelligence.

  • The Information Systems Concentration is a unique program offering a blend of technical courses and business courses. The student selects technical courses to match their interests and business courses such as Quantitative Analysis, Accounting, and Economics.

  • The Fast Track is for students without prior undergraduate degrees in computer science or a related field. The Fast Track consists of at most six courses, allowing students from any background to prepare themselves for success in the MS-CAIS program coursework.

The Online/Classroom Mix

Our program offers a truly unique and exciting educational experience through our newly developed multi-media cyber-classroom, which captures the entire classroom experience. Coupled with our Blackboard® online Content Management software it allows each student in our computer science and information systems classes to tailor their education from a completely virtual, online learning experience to a completely in-class, on-campus experience.

The Computer Science concentration of the Computer Science & Information Systems program can be completed entirely online.

Some courses in the Information Systems concentration are taken through the School of Management, which offers courses completely on campus or in a "mixed mode" format, which are online courses with on-campus residencies at UM-Flint on a Friday and Saturday every six weeks throughout the semester.  Additionally, distance learners have the option to take the minimum required six credit hours of Information Systems courses through another university and trasnsfer those credits into the program with departmental approval to facilitate fully online learning.

You may even customize your learning experience on the fly as life responsibilities dictate, which will allow smooth completion of the degree, even if a job requires constant or extended travel. Our approach boldly redefines the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom experience and offers the student a transparent blending of the in-class and online experiences. Whether you are in Michigan or the Far East you can successfully complete the University of Michigan-Flint MS program in Computer Science and Information Systems!

BS/MS Program

The MS in Computer Science and Information Systems can be pursued by UM-Flint undergraduate students as part of a joint BS/MS program that can be completed in a total of five years.  A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in computer science courses is requried for acceptance into the BS/MS program. A student interested in the BS/MS program should apply at the start of their junior year (following the same admission procedures outlined on this site).  Upon completion of the requirements for the BS portion of the program, the student is awarded the BS in Computer Science degree. Upon completion of the remaining 21 credits in the MS program, the student is awarded the MS degree. Search the UM-Flint Catalog for detailed course information or contact the Department of Computer Science (contact information at the right).
