MDE Required Reading Courses
Effective July 1, 2009, Michigan teachers who do not hold a Professional Teaching Certificate are required by PA 30 (formerly PA118) to take an approved 3 credit reading course for the renewal of a provisional teaching certificate or the initial issuance of the Professional Education certificate.
The University of Michigan-Flint offers a course to meet this requirement. This courses is an excellent literacy professional development for all teachers, not only for those filling the PA 30 requirement. All are welcome!

UM-Flint offers 2 state-approved courses:
EDR 540 Assessment-Based Literacy Instruction in Elementary Classrooms
EDR 541 Assessment-Based Literacy Instruction in Secondary Classrooms
Course description: Overview of classroom literacy assessment for teachers; addresses all requirements in PA 118. Provides literacy assessment tools and methods of differentiating instruction in elementary/secondary classrooms. Fieldwork required.
How to enroll in UM-Flint courses
Teachers who are NOT already enrolled as graduate students in a degree program at UM-Flint are able to take either course as a Guest or Lifelong Learning graduate student. The only documents required for admission include the Application for Lifelong Learning or Guest Admission and proof that you have completed a bachelor's degree, which can take the form of a copy of a transcript or teaching certificate. Simply apply for admission and send in proof of degree; we will admit you to the university and provide you with instructions for registering for the course.
Teachers who are currently enrolled in a UM-Flint graduate program can simply register for the course through SIS.
