Education (MA) - Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements
Admission into the Master of Arts in Education program is selective and is determined by the Education Department Graduate Committee.
Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for admission:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- 3.0 or higher undergraduate grade point average
- Literacy K-12 and Special Education applicants: Michigan teaching certificate required
- Early Childhood Education applicants: If applying for the ZA endorsement, an elementary or special education Michigan teaching certificate is required; otherwise, certificate not required
- Technology in Education applicants: If applying for the NP endorsement, a Michigan teaching certificate is required; otherwise, certificate not required
Application Process
To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit the following to the Office of Graduate Programs, 251 Thompson Library, by the application deadline:
- Application for Graduate Admission (apply online or with a paper application)
- Application fee (non-refundable) payable to the University of Michigan-Flint
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Statement of Purpose describing the applicant’s goals for entering the graduate program and how these goals connect to the applicant's views on teaching and learning
- Three letters of recommendation, preferably with at least one from an academic reference and one from an individual familiar with your teaching or professional work
- A copy of a teaching certificate is required for those applying to the Literacy K-12 and Special Education concentrations; a teaching certificate is required for Early Childhood Education and Technology in Education applicants only if applying for an endorsement on a Michigan teaching certificate
- International students must submit additional documentation
Application Deadlines
The program has rolling admissions and reviews completed applications each month. To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit all application materials to the Office of Graduate Programs on or before the application deadline.
Application deadlines are as follows:

| Winter | November 15 |
| Spring | March 15 |
| Summer | May 15 |
*You must apply by the early deadline to be eligible for scholarships, grants, and research asssistantships.
International students are required to apply earlier than the deadlines posted here. The final deadlines for international students are May 1 for the fall semester, September 1 for the winter semester, and January 1 for the spring term.
