Admission Requirements
Admission into the Master of Arts in Education program is selective and is determined by the Education Department Graduate Committee.
Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for admission:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- 3.0 or higher undergraduate grade point average
- A valid teaching certificate is required for those applying to Literacy K-12 or Special Education; a teaching certificate is optional for Early Childhood Education and Technology in Education applicants, but required when applying for an endorsement on a Michigan teaching certificate
Application Process
To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit the following to the Office of Graduate Programs, 251 Thompson Library, by the application deadline:
- Application for Graduate Admission (apply online or with a paper application)
- Application fee (non-refundable) payable to the University of Michigan-Flint
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Statement of Purpose describing the applicant’s goals for entering the graduate program and how these goals connect to the applicant's views on teaching and learning
- Three letters of recommendation, preferably with at least one from an academic reference and one from an individual familiar with your teaching or professional work
- A copy of a currently held teaching certificate is required for those applying to the Literacy K-12 and Special Education concentrations; a teaching certificate is optional for Early Childhood Education and Technology in Education applicants
- International students must submit additional documentation
Application Deadlines
The program has rolling admissions and reviews completed applications each month. To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit all application materials to the Office of Graduate Programs on or before the application deadline.
Application deadlines are as follows:

*You must apply by the early deadline to be eligible for scholarships, grants, and research asssistantships.
The Technology in Education Global Program has an application deadline of December 15, 2008 for the Spring 2009 cohort (the Global Program accepts applications for the Spring term only). Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply well in advance of the deadline. Please note that the next Global Program will begin in Spring 2009 and that there will not be a cohort accepted in Spring 2008.
International students are required to apply earlier than the deadlines posted here. The final deadlines for international students are May 1 for the fall semester, September 1 for the winter semester, and January 1 for the spring term.
