What Sets UM-Flint's Accelerated Nursing (MSN) Program Apart?

Focus:

• A limited-time, grant-funded accelerated Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

• It will equip you with the skills necessary for advanced nursing practice in primary health care as an Adult Nurse Practitioner.

• As an accelerated program, you’ll complete in just 16 months.

• This full-time program is taught in a distance-learning (online) format with 6-8 campus visits required over 16 months.

• Clinical courses are arranged in your area, so it is convenient for you to gain practical experience.

Grant Funding

Grant Eligibility

• Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident or possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S.

• Must be enrolled full-time in the accelerated MSN program

• Must achieve a B or better in all courses to continue to receive grant funds in subsequent semesters

Admission Requirements

The number of individuals admitted into the Master of Science in Nursing program is limited. Students are admitted for the winter semester only in years 2011-2014. Priority will be given to those not already accepted or enrolled in an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

You must meet the following requirements to be eligible for admission:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university with an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (3.5 for graduate work)

• Current RN license in the United States

• Three or more credits in college-level Chemistry with grade of “C” or better

• Three or more credits in college-level Statistics with grade of “C” or better

NOTE: Prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to starting MSN courses.

Application Process

To be considered for admission, submit the following to the Office of Graduate Programs, 251 Thompson Library. The Program Admissions Committee will evaluate your application once all items have been received.

• $55 application fee (non-refundable)

• Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended

• Curriculum vitae or resume

• Copy of current RN license (submit either a license verification printout or a photocopy of your license)

• Professional Goal Statement describing your career objectives and areas of clinical interest. The statement should be a 500-word typewritten document that describes your reasons for pursuing a master of science in nursing degree and should reflect a strong sense of career direction. The statement should relate past experiences to advancing a career in nursing. Include your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at UM-Flint, your research interests, and your professional plans and career goals. Please describe any past achievements in nursing including any professional organization memberships or positions, awards, scholarships,  nominations, certifications, committee/project work, or other accomplishments you wish to include. You also may explain any special circumstances applicable to your background and elaborate on any scholarly publications, achievements, abilities, and/or professional history.

• Three recommendations, including one from a doctorally- or master-prepared academician or researcher, a supervisor in an employment setting, and a practicing RN or APN, all familiar with your intellectual ability, academic achievement, and professional commitment. The recommendation form must be submitted (either online or in paper); you may submit letters of recommendation, but they must be accompanied by the recommendation forms.

Application Deadlines

• Winter 2014 – February 1, 2013

Admission applications and all supporting materials must be received by the Office of Graduate Programs by 5pm on the day of the deadline to be considered for admission to the MSN program.

Enrollment Deposit

If you are selected for admission to the accelerated MSN program, you will be required to pay a $500 enrollment deposit to reserve your seat. The deadline to pay the deposit will be indicated in your letter of admission.
