Nursing (MSN) - Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements

The number of individuals admitted into the Master of Science in Nursing program is limited. Students are be admitted to the fall semester only.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for admission:

  1. Current Michigan RN license
  2. An overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  3. College-level Chemistry with grade of “C” or better
  4. College-level Statistics with grade of “C” or better


In addition to ‘1’ through ‘4’ above, those RNs seeking admission to the Master of Science in Nursing program who do not already hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing must complete the following course work or their equivalents:

  • Critical Writing and Reading (ENG 112)
  • Undergraduate Research (SWK 270 or NUR 308 or SOC 210 or PSY 201)
  • Undergraduate Ethics or Bioethics (NSC 168 or PHL 162 or HCR 304)
  • RN Role Transition (NUR 300)
  • Basic Health Assessment (NUR 202 or Challenge exam)
  • Community Health Nursing (NUR 410)

Application Process

To be considered for admission, an applicant must submit the following to the Office of Graduate Programs, 251 Thompson Library, before the Program Admissions Committee will evaluate the applicant’s file:

  • Application for Graduate Admission (apply online or with a paper application)
  • Application fee (non-refundable) payable to the University of Michigan-Flint
  • A completed supplemental application to the MSN program
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Copy of current Michigan RN license
  • Written statement of professional philosophy
  • Written statement of professional goals:  Your statement of professional goals should describe your objectives for graduate study and reasons for selecting this program. Please include your professional, intellectual, and research interests, and expectations for career, employment, and other vocational activity in the future.
  • Three letters of recommendation. One recommendation must be from your nursing program director or dean if you have graduated from your nursing program in the last seven years. All other recommendations should be from supervisors or managers of your recent clinical positions or from academic faculty.
  • International students must submit additional documentation.


Applicants who do not hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) must submit an approved Letter of Intent, a positive RN Performance Evaluation, and the Department of Nursing Application Packet prior to applying to the MSN program. Please contact the Department of Nursing at (810) 762-3420 if you plan to follow the RN/MSN pathway.

An interview with the Program Admissions Committee will be scheduled after review of your application materials.
 

Application Deadline

Admission applications must be completed by May 1. However, a "rolling" admission policy allows applications to be submitted throughout the year. Students are recommended to submit their application materials as early as possible. You must apply by May 1 to be eligible for scholarships, grants, and research asssistantships and/or if you are international student.
