The highly-regarded School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint designed its Graduate Certificate in Business for students who obtained a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than business.

This program offers two flexible formats to pursue courses, both of which are designed for busy working professionals. You’ll emerge from this program with a quality University of Michigan education which will prepare you with the financial, marketing, and management skills to become a valued and effective leader in your organization.

  • No GMAT exam required for admission
  • Prepares individuals with management and leadership potential to become leaders in their fields and professions
  • Courses are offered in two delivery modes to fit your lifestyle: Traditional, on-campus courses and NetPlus!, mixed-mode courses (online with on-campus sessions every six weeks). 
  • You will be taking courses with MBA students, expanding your network, and experiencing the excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarship of our MBA faculty.
  • All successfully completed certificate courses are transferrable to the UM-Flint MBA program if you apply and are admitted to same

Note: Beginning Fall 2016, fall and winter terms will be 15 weeks long with residencies on 3rd and 11th Fridays/Saturdays. Spring and summer terms will be 7 weeks long with residencies on 2nd and 6th Fridays/Saturdays. 


The Graduate Certificate in Business classes are taught by our expert MBA faculty who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to their instruction. From your faculty mentors, you’ll learn how these lessons transfer to the real-world applications of the boardroom and beyond. Your instructors will remain available and accessible to mentor and support you throughout your educational journey.

Graduate Certificate in Business

The Graduate Certificate in Business program is intended primarily for individuals with degrees in areas other than business, who are interested in learning some basic concepts of business or are considering the eventual completion of an MBA. (Students with a bachelor’s in business are encouraged to pursue the MBA program.)

Students should apply as a non-candidate for degree in the Graduate Programs Office.  Students in this certificate program are not eligible for federal financial aid.

Admission to the Program

Students pursuing certificates in business are admitted to the program using the same criteria as those currently existing for the MBA program with the exception of GMAT or GRE scores. Admission to the Post-Master’s Certificate requires an MBA or equivalent degree. Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in their bachelor’s degree. The applicants must also have completed a college level mathematics, statistics, or quantitative course to be eligible for the program. Applications for admission are available from the School of Management Office, its website, or from the Office of Graduate Programs. Admission to the program is not granted until the application materials are submitted and reviewed.

Application Deadlines

Priority application deadlines are:

  • August 1 for fall entry
  • November 1 for winter entry
  • February 1 for spring entry
  • May 1 for summer entry

International applications are due:

  • May 1 for fall entry
  • September 1 for winter entry

Completed files received by the deadline receive priority in review; files completed after the deadline are reviewed if seats remain.

  • FIN 561 - Financial Management (3).
  • MGT 541 - Organizational Behavior (3).
  • MKT 531 - Marketing Management (3).
  • SCM 571 - Operations Management (3).

  • Students may not waive or transfer courses into certificate program.

Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Business program is open to qualified graduates with a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better in their bachelor's degree. The applicant must also have completed a college-level math, statistics, or quantitative course to be eligible for the program. The GMAT or GRE is not required for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Business. Students with a business bachelor's degree are encouraged to pursue the MBA program.
