Health Careers Opportunity Program

What is HCOP at UM-Flint?

The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is a federally funded program granted to the School of Health Professions and Studies (SHPS) by the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration.

HCOP's primary goal is to assist and encourage students from Flint area schools to join the health professions field.  As more students from the Flint area schools join health profession programs, graduate and successfully pursue careers in the health professions, diversity among health professionals in Genesee County will improve.  

HCOP has several programs in place to assist Flint area students with the academic and social skills needed to successfully graduate from high school,  enroll and graduate from college.  We have programs for elementary, middle, high school and college students. 


 

The following programs are offered to qualified participants: 

 

Pre-College Programs

Health Professions Club The Health Professions Club is a nine week after school club that exposes elementary, middle, and high school students to health careers and provides them hands-on activities to explore the various roles performed by health care professionals. 

Tutoring Program The Tutoring Program is a free tutoring program for students at McKinley Middle School, Classical Academy and Genesee Early College.

Saturday Morning Academy The Saturday Morning Academy is a twenty (20) week program that is designed to increase 10-12 grade students' awareness of health professions and enhance their ability to successfully compete for admission into health professions educational programs. 

Health Careers Day On Friday, April 24, 2009, the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) held its first annual "Health Careers Day."

College Services

Realizing Potential, Excelling and Achieving Careers in Health (REACH) REACH is a service for college students and is designed to provide them with personalized resources for achieving success as they pursue a college degree in health professions.

Careers in Health Academic and Mentoring Program (CHAMP)  CHAMP is a health professions mentoring program that provides an opportunity for students and mentors to meet at least twice per month.

Tutoring Program Free tutorial services are offered for college students enrolled in the School of Health Professions and Studies.

Academic Success Workshops Throughout the year, HCOP and the School of Health Professions and Studies offer a variety of supportive workshops for SHPS students.

Summer Programs

Junior Summer Science and Math Camp (JSSMC) The JSSMC is a 6 week summer program that is designed to enhance middle school students' comprehension of basic science and math skills.  

Pre-Health Professions Enrichment Program (PPEP) PPEP is a 6 week summer program for seniors interested in pursuing a career in the health field.
