All users will need to connect to the UMF network via a VPN connection prior to attempting to access Progdata, departmental drives, or their personal drives using this information. Check the related links at the end of this article for information on how to connect to the VPN. While you are connected to the VPN you will be unable to surf the internet: you will only be able to make use of university resources such as Progdata, personal/departmental drives, and remote desktop access to your office computer.
Remote Desktop Access to a campus office computer is only available for faculty.
- In your Web browser, open http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client.
- Choose the operating system for which you are installing FileZilla (These instructions are written based on the Windows version)
- A File Download dialog box will appear. Choose Save.
- It will ask you for a place to save the file; it is recommended that you save the file to your desktop so it can be found easily later. Click Save.
- After the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file. Double-click on FileZilla_Server-0_9_25.exe.
- This will start the installation process. Proceed to the FileZilla Installation section below.
- Select Run after you have double clicked on the icon.
- Read the FileZilla license agreement and then click I agree.
- Select what users will be able to use FileZilla and hit Next.
- Select the Components you will install, and hit Next.
- You will be asked to choose a location to install. By default the program is installed in C:\Program Files\FileZilla FTP Client. Accept the default and click Install.
- Click Install after selecting a pathway for FileZilla on the Start Menu Folder.
- Click Finish after the setup has installed.
FileZilla Installation is now completed. The next few steps will show you how to set up FileZilla to access Progdata and your Personal & Departmental Directories on the server.
To access FileZilla, click on the
Start Button and go to
Programs. Find the folder FileZilla and click on the program
FileZilla.
After you have completed the account setup, FileZilla will be completely configured and ready to connect.
To Access FileZilla:
- Open FileZilla.
- You should now have a screen similar to the one below. Enter the information as show in the picture.

- In the Host field (yourserver.com), enter: progdata.umflint.edu
- In the Login field, enter: uniqname@umflint.edu
- In the Password field, enter your LAN password
3. Click on the
QuickConnect button. You are now connected to
Progdata.
As soon as you connect you will be in Progdata and all folders in Progdata will be displayed. The screen should be similar to the one below. Progdata folders are displayed on the right. Proceed to Transferring Files.
- Open FileZilla.
- You should now have a screen similar to the one shown below. Enter the information as shown in the picture.

- In the Host field (yourserver.com), enter: homedrive.umflint.edu
- In the Login field, enter: uniqname@umflint.edu
- In the Password field, enter your LAN password
- Click on the QuickConnect button. You are now connected to Homedrive.
By default FileZilla saves your information in the history. If you want to clear this data, please see the section below titled Clearing Information from FileZilla. As soon as you connect you will be in your homedrive with all of your files and folders displayed. The screen should be similar to the one below. Your folders are displayed on the right. Proceed to
Transferring Files.
- Open FileZilla.
- You should now have a screen similar to the one below. Enter the information as show in the picture.

- In the Login field, enter: uniqname@umflint.edu
- In the Password field, enter your LAN password
3. Click on the QuickConnect button. You are now connected to the Departmental Drives.
By default FileZilla saves your information in the history. If you want to clear this data, please see the section below titled Clearing Information from FileZilla. To Download a File from Progdata, Your Personal, or Departmental Directory:
- Select the file you would like to download. Right-click on the file.
- A menu will appear, from this menu select download, Direct, and finally click Select Folder.
- A Browse for Folder window will appear, select the location you would like to save the file to on your computer. By default, My Documents is selected.
To Upload a File to Your Personal or Departmental Directory:
- Once you are in the folder where you would like to place the uploaded files, right click on the file name and select Upload, and then click Select Files.
- An Open window will appear. Select the files that you have saved on your computer and click the Open button. The files will be uploaded to the folder.
To erase the history in FileZilla, go to
Edit, and then go to
Clear Private Data. Select from the categories what information you would like to delete, then select
OK. Your private information will be cleared.
