Before You Begin:
These instructions apply to computers running Windows XP.
- Click the Start Button.
- Click Control Panel on the Start Menu.
- Double-click Network Connections inside the Control Panel.
- Click Create a New Connection in the Network Tasks panel.
- Click Next in the New Connection Wizard.
- Select Connect to the network at my workplace in the New Connection Wizard.
- Click Next
- Select Virtual Private Network Connection in the New Connection Wizard.
- Click Next.
- Enter a name for your connection (ex. umflint-vpn) in the Company Name field.
- Click Next.
- Enter remote.umflint.edu in the Host name or IP address field.
- Click Next.
- Click Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop if you would like a desktop shortcut.
- Click Finish.
Your Virtual Private Network connection is now configured.
- Double-click the umflint-vpn icon. This may be on your desktop or under network connections.
- Enter your uniquename@umflint.edu in the User name field.
- Enter your LAN Password in the password field.
- Click Connect.
- You will now be connected to the UM-Flint VPN.
Note that the VPN connection icon on the desktop will appear “Lit up” and a message will appear that you are connected in the lower right hand corner. Also inside your Control Panel, under Network Connections your VPN Icon should look like this when connected.
When you connect to the UM-Flint VPN your computer can utilize the campus network. When connected you can setup your Outlook Account at home using Microsoft Outlook (Solves the High Speed Internet Problem). You can Map Network drives and take advantage of Microsoft Office Communicator for communication with people on campus.
** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **
