This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist the user in setting up a Virtual Private Network from home. Users will then be able to access University resources from home as if they were on campus. 
Before You Begin:
These instructions apply to people using Windows Vista or Windows 7.  Please be aware that for Windows 7 some of the images may differ slightly.

Setting up the VPN Manually:

  1. Click the Start Orb.

  2. Type Network in the search bar.
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center from the Network Browser.

  4. Click Set up a connection or network

  5. Click Connect to a workplace in the connection wizard.

  6. Click Next in the connection wizard.

  7. Click Use my Internet connection (VPN) in the connection wizard.

  8. Enter remote.umflint.edu in the Internet address field.

  9. Enter a name for your connection (ex. umflint-vpn) in the destination name.

  10. Click Next in the connection wizard.

  11. Enter your uniqname@umflint.edu in the User name field.

  12. Enter your LAN Password in the Password field.

  13. Click Connect in the connection wizard.

  14. You will now be connected to the UM-Flint VPN.

What can you do now that you are connected?

When you connect to the UM-Flint VPN your computer can utilize the campus network. When connected you can setup your Outlook Account at home using Microsoft Outlook (Solves the High Speed Internet Problem). You can Map Network drives and take advantage of Microsoft Office Communicator for communication with people on campus.

** Remember to Disconnect the VPN when finished with it. **

To Disconnect From the VPN

Windows Vista

  1. Right Click your internet icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.  It should look like a computer screen, or multiple computer screens if you are on wireless
  2. Select "Disconnect from"
  3. Select the name of the VPN connection you created. 

You should now be disconnected from the VPN.



Windows 7

  1. Right Click your internet icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
  2. Click Open Network and Sharing Center
  3. In the Connect or disconnect section click the VPN connection you created for UM-Flint
  4. Click Disconnect in the bottom Activity section

You should now be disconnected from the VPN.
