Before You Begin:
You must check your computer’s settings to see if it meets the minimum requirements to run Microsoft Office XP.
System Requirements Memory Requirements Windows 95 - Please call the ITS HelpDesk to place a work ticket to see if your computer can be upgraded to Windows 98 and handle running Microsoft Office XP.
Windows 98 2nd Edition - You will need 24 MB of RAM.
Windows ME or Windows NT (Service Pack 6 or later) - You will need 32 MB of RAM.
Windows 2000 Professional - You will need 64 MB of RAM.
Windows XP Professional - You will need 128 MB of RAM
an Additional 8 MB for each other office program running simultaneously. To find out the properties of your computer:
- Right-click on your My Computer icon.
- Click on the Properties options. The System Properties window will now be showing.
- On the General tab you will see what operating system you are currently running and how many MB of RAM your computer has.
Please call the ITS HelpDesk if your computer does not meet the above requirements.
Required Hard Drive Space Hard drisk space requirements will vary depending on configuration. Listed below are the minimum hard disk requirements for Office XP.
Office XP Installation Minimum 250 MB of available hard disk space
Typical 300 MB of available hard disk space
Advanced 500 MB of available hard disk space
512MB = 1/2GB
To Check Your Hard Drive Space
- Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
- Next, right-click on the icon for your C: drive.
- Select the Properties from the menu.
- On the General tab you will see how much space is being used on your hard drive and how much free space is available. Take note of how much free space you have because it will determine which installation option of Microsoft Office XP you can install.
An additional 115 MB is required on the hard drive space is required where the operating system is installed. Users without Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) require an extra 50 MB of hard disk space for system update files.

To Check Your Web Browser
Microsoft Office XP requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher to run properly. To find out version of Internet Explorer you currently using:
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click on Help menu near the top of the screen.
- Go to About Internet Explorer this will tell you what your current version is. Take note of your version of Internet Explorer.
To Access the Setup File: The installation program for Microsoft Office XP is in the shortcut to Server Applications Folder on your desktop. For more information on the Server Applications Folder, please see the flyer: What is the Server Applications Folder. Once in the Server Applications Folder, double-click on the Office XP Setup.exe file. This will bring up an installation menu.
- If you have version 5.5 or higher proceed to the Installing Microsoft Office XP section of this quicknote.
- If your version of Internet Explorer is less than 5.5 you will need to upgrade your web browser before installing Microsoft Office XP. Proceed to the Upgrade Internet Explorer section.
To Upgrade Internet Explorer:
- From the installation menu select Install Internet Explorer 6.0.
- Review License Agreement, select I accept the agreement, then click Next again.
- Select Install Now Typical set of components installation.
- To complete installation click Finish- this will reboot your computer.
- Reopen Office XP Setup file from the Server Application folder.
Installation of Microsoft Office XP To start the installation of Microsoft Office XP.
- From the installation menu select Install Office XP.
- Select either Minimum, Typical, or Advanced installation.
- Recall the amount of hard drive space you computer has available.
- Wait for office to finish installing and reboot your computer before proceeding with the installation of Service Pack.
Minimum installation only will give you access to Word, Excel, and Outlook and they run from the server. The Typical installation you also receive Powerpoint Access FrontPage, but it also runs off the server. The Advanced option comes with access to all the software, but will run off your computer hard drive. Selection should be made based on your computer’s available hard drive space. Installation of Office XP Service Pack 1:
- Reopen Office XP Setup file from the Server Application folder.
- From the installation menu select Install Office XP Service Pack 1,
- Follow the prompts. When asked if you want to install the Office XP Service Pack 1, you want to continue click Yes.
- Review License Agreement, and click Yes.
- Then wait for installation to complete when it tells you the update was applied successfully click ok.
Downloading Windows Update After you have finished installing Office XP and Service Pack1, you will have to download the Windows Updates to make sure the software will run properly on your computer. Please see the What is Windows Update flyer for instructions on updating your computer.
