BasicsAs a student or employee of the University of Michigan-Flint, you are required to use a number of passwords in order to access various computing services. It can be difficult to keep these passwords straight, so this flyer explains what each password is used for and who can help you with them.

Never let anyone else login with your account
LAN Password This is the most commonly used password on our campus. LAN stands for Local Area Network. Please review the LAN password policy and guidelines at http://www.umflint.edu/its/services/policies.htm

The LAN password is used in the following situations: 

  1. Logging into any computer on campus.
  2. Accessing email: Webmail
  3. Logging into Blackboard for online classes. 
  4. Logging into to the Wireless Proxy Server.
  5. Using the Library Proxy Server to access library periodical or electronic reserves.
    • Lan passwords are not used for the Mirlyn or Inter Library Loan program

This excludes ERes Administrative accounts; please contact the library for assistance. 

If students have difficulty with their LAN password, the consultants in the student computer labs, as well as the HelpDesk are able to answer questions or change this password for you. **Photo ID will be required.** Employees must contact the HelpDesk with LAN password problems.

Ann Arbor (Kerberos) Password This password is usually associated with any computing service involving our Ann Arbor campus. Ann Arbor passwords can be referred to as Kerberos passwords; they are one and the same. It is used in the following situations:  

  1. Accessing and editing your U-M Online Directory entry. 
  2. Library resources including MIRLYN, MIRLYNweb, and the Inter Library Loan program.
  3. Accessing M-Stores in Ann Arbor (employees only).
  4. Other resources available on UM-Ann Arbor websites.

Any difficulties with Ann Arbor passwords must be addressed in the Helpdesk. If you need do not know your current Ann Arbor password, you must come to the Helpdesk in person with photo ID.
Personal Identification Number (PIN)PIN has been implemented in order to access our Student Information Services (SIS). Users will need to enter their UMID or Social Security Number and a PIN to look at registration, course information, academic records, Financial Aid, and Student Computer Account Information. If you have forgotten your PIN, and you have already supplied your personal Security Question, then simply enter your User ID and click the Forgot PIN? button at the bottom of your login reset your PIN. If you are unable to reset your pin in this mannor contact ITS Helpdesk at 810-766-6804. Banner Password (UM-Flint faculty & staff only) Programs such as Banner use their own passwords which do not have any connections to other services. These programs are typically only used by faculty and staff.

The training for banner must be completed before access can be granted to the banner system.  The training can be found at: http://www.umflint.edu/its/services/banner.htm.Banner: Initial ID is your Uniqname. The initial password for Banner will be emailed to the faculty or staff within 2-3 days after completing the training.
