The UMF_SECURE wireless network is a replacement of the UMF_BASIC wireless network that has been used by the campus over the past few years. This tutorial will explain how to connect to this wireless network with the Windows Vista operating system.

Configuring UMF_SECURE
  1. Open the 'Connect to a Network' window by right-clicking the wireless icon in the taskbar

  2. Click 'Set up a connection or network'

  3. Click 'Manually Connect to a wireless Network

  4. Fill in the following information in the window
    • Network Name: UMF_SECURE
    • Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
    • Encryption Type: AES
    • Check 'Start this connection automatically
    • Check 'Connect even if the network is not broadcasting'

  5. Click 'Change connection settings'

  6. Navigate to the 'Security tab' and set authentication method to 'Microsoft Protected EAP (PEAP)
  7. Click 'Settings'

  8. Uncheck 'Validate server certificate'
  9. Set 'Authentication Method' to 'Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)'
  10. Click 'Configure...'

  11. Uncheck 'Automatically use my Windows Logon name and password'
  12. Click 'OK' to all open windows

  13. Once all of the settings are set, click on the bubble that should show up in the lower-right hand corner of the screen
  14. In the 'Connect UMF_SECURE' window, fill in the following information

Configuring Your Browser

Configure Firefox for Browsing

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Options
  4. Click Advanced
  5. Click the Network Tab
  6. Click Settings
  7. Select Automatic Proxy Configuration URL
  8. Type http://cache.umflint.edu/cache.pac

Set FireFox to Not Prompt for Username and Password Continuously

  1. In the Location Bar (address bar) at the top of FireFox type about:config
  2. If you get a warning stating "This might void your warranty!" click I'll be careful, I promise!
  3. On your keyboard press <Ctrl> + <F>
  4. In the Filter Window type network.negotiate-auth.allow-proxies
  5. Double-click network.negotiate-auth.allow-proxies to change the Value from true to false
  6. Close the window
  7. Restart FireFox

Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools - found in the top right corner
  3. Click Internet Options
  4. Click the Connections tab
  5. Click LAN Settings
  6. Check Automatically Detect Settings
  7. Check Use Automatic Configuration Script
  8. In the Address Field type http://cache.umflint.edu/cache.pac
