How to Set-up VPN from Home for Linux (Ubuntu)

This quicknote is for use in setting up a VPN connection at home using Ubuntu (Debian) Linux

Connecting to the UM-Flint VPN with Ubuntu (Debian) Linux
  1. Click Applications
  2. Click Add/Remove...
  3. Under the section entitled Show select All Available Applications
  4. Search for pptp
  5. Click the checkbox next to PPTP VPN Connection Manager
  6. Click Apply Changes
  7. Restart Your Computer
  8. After the machine has rebooted, click the connection manager icon in the tray next to the clock The icon should look like 2 monitors
  9. Highlight VPN Connections
  10. Click Configure VPN
  11. Click Add
  12. Make sure Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is selected 
  13. Click Create
  14. In the text box labeled Gateway type remote.umflint.edu
  15. In the text box labeled User name type your uniqname Make sure not to use @umflint.edu after your uniqname
  16. In the text box labeled Password enter your LAN password
  17. In the text box labeled NT Domain enter FLINT-NT
  18. Click  Advanced
  19. Uncheck EAP in the first section
  20. Under the section entitled Security and Compression check Use point-to-point encryption (MPPE)
  21. Make sure Security is set to All available
  22. Uncheck Allow stateful encryption 
  23. Click Ok 
  24. Name your VPN Connection in the section entitled Connection Name (Suggestion is UM-Flint)
  25. Click Apply 
  26. Click Close on the Network Connections window
  27. Restart your computer
  28. After the machine has rebooted, click the connection manager icon in the tray next to the clock The icon should look like 2 monitors
  29. In addition to 'Configure VPN' and the greyed-out 'Disconnect VPN', you should now see the VPN connection you just configured.
  30. Click your VPN connection for UM-Flint from this menu  The icon should show that it is working, and if the connection was successful a small 'padlock' icon should be present in front of the connection manager icon.
 

You are now connected to the VPN at U of M – Flint. You can test that it is working by opening your web browser, and entering http://homedrive.umflint.edu/home/your_uniqname_here. A box will now pop up asking for your uniqname and password, and once those are correctly entered you will see the files in your homedrive displayed in your browser.
