This Quicknote is written as a tool to assist University of Michigan-Flint users with maintaining an email list or list serve (to be used by moderator of the list). It explains how to add and remove addresses to and from the list, review addresses in the list, review all list-names, how to have users subscribe or unsubscribe to the list, send a message to the list and obtain more help.

How to Subscribe and Unsubscribe to the Happenings List:

  2. Follow the instructions on the webpage that opens to subscribe or unsubscribe to the Happenings list


How to Subscribe and Unsubscribe to the UMF Faculty & Staff List:

How to Subscribe and Unsubscribe to the Classifieds List:

Moderating a List
How to Add an Address to the List:
**Note: You must be the list moderator/adMinistrator to do the following.

**Note: This does not apply to the happenings, umf_fac_staff, classifieds or sadnews lists.
1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu

2. Type in the body of the email message:
subscribe <listname> <emailRecipeient@umflint.edu>

For example: subscribe testlist jbenson@umflint.edu

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.)

How to Remove an Address from the List:
**Note: You must be the list moderator to use this command.

**Note: This does not apply to the happenings, umf_fac_staff, classifieds or sadnews lists.
1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu
2. Type in the body of the email message: unsubscribe
For example: unsubscribe testlist jbenson@umflint.edu

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.)

How to Review all Addresses in the List:
**Note: You must be the list moderator to use this command.

1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu
2. Type in the body of the email message: who
For example: who testlist

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.) 

How to Review all Lists at UM-Flint:
**Note: This does not apply to the happenings, umf_fac_staff, classifieds or sadnews lists.
Following these steps will generate a list of all current email lists or list serves and send it to you via email.

1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu
2. Type in the body of the email message: lists 

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.)

Basic Functions of a List:
**Note: This does not apply to the happenings, umf_fac_staff, classifieds or sadnews lists.
To Subscribe to List:
1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu
2. Type in the body of the email message: subscribe
For example subscribe umf_students

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.)

To Unsubscribe to a List:
1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu
2. Type in the body of the email message: unsubscribe
For example unsubscribe testlist

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.)

To Send a Message to the List:
1. Address the mail message to: @list.umflint.edu
2. Type your message in the body of the email message.
3. Send the message.

Following these steps will send a help file to you via email.

1. Address an email message to majordomo@list.umflint.edu

2. Type in the body of the email message: help 

**Note: Leave the Subject: line blank and don’t sign your message or send it with a signature.
3. Send the message. (If it asks you if you want to send the message without a subject, click Yes.)

**Note: Majordomo is an automated program, so the above syntax must be exact in order for the operation to work correctly
