**You must be Current Student, Faculty, or Staff member to download antivirus software**

Before You Begin:

Virus infections can manifest themselves in many different ways. You may notice applications stop working properly, freeze up often, or you may be informed via error messages that your computer is infected. If you suspect your computer has a virus, follow the appropriate instructions below to eliminate it. You may contact the ITS HelpDesk at 766-6804 if you need more information, or if the software offered here does not eliminate your virus.

If you are planning to download the Antivirus software from the Internet (using Option 1 below), then you will need your Uniqname and LAN password. If you do not know your LAN password, please contact the ITS HelpDesk for assistance.

To Obtain the Antivirus Software:

Getting Antivirus Software from the Internet.

1. Go to www.umflint.edu/its

2. Click on the ITS Services link in the upper left under ITS HOME. Scroll down to ITS Services (A-Z)

3. until you find Software Downloads under S.

4. Under Supported Software and Downloads, scroll down until you find Virus Scan.

5. Choose Download Now! NOTE (The Instructions link will bring you to the quicknote you are currently viewing)

6. Under Windows Users choose U-M Preconfigured VirusScan 8.5 Installer web page;

7. Then choose U-M Preconfigured VirusScan 8.5 Installer

8. This will bring you to a log in screen as pictured below. You must use your unique name for the Login ID and your Kerberos Password as the Password.

9. Upon successful log in you will see this box appear.

10. Choose Run If the box below appears choose Run again.


How to Schedule Auto Updates and Auto Scanning:

It is important that you regularly update VirusScan in order to scan for more recently discovered viruses. These instructions will set VirusScan to automatically update and run at a time you select.

1. Go to the Start menu, All Programs, Network Associates, select Virus Scan Console.
You may get an error message the first time telling you it must be installed. Click OK, then repeat step 1.

2. In the Virus Scan Console, click once on AutoUpdate, then click the Properties icon in the toolbar (1st button from the left).

3. In the Task Properties window, click the Schedule button.

4. Check the box to enable scheduling, then click on the Schedule tab. Select how often you want to update under Schedule Task (we suggest using weekly), then set the day and time you want it to run. The computer must be on in order for it to run, and it should only take a few minutes.

5. Click OK when done, and then click on OK again.

6. Back in the Virus Console, click once on Scan All Fixed Disks, then click the Properties icon in the toolbar.

7. Click the Schedule tab and repeat steps 4 and 5.

8. Use the in the upper right corner to close the Virus Scan Console when finished.

Operating McAfee VirusScan for Windows:
Sometimes you may want to run the virus scan manually. Follow the instructions below.

To manually run VirusScan.

1. Go to the Start menu, Programs, McAfee, and select Virus Scan Console.


2. Right Click on Full Scan and click on Start. This should start the scanning process.




Saving and Installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Macintosh:

1. In the “Finder” menu bar select “Go”.

2. Select “Connect to Server”

3. The server path for MacPub is: smb://appsc.umflint.edu/macpub

4. Choose “Connect”.

5. You may be prompted to login. Enter your uniqname and LAN password. Click “OK”.

6. Double click on “Sophos_Anti-Virus_U-M.dmg”.

7. Double-click the icon to begin installation.

8. In the install window that opens, click “Continue”

9. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. When it asks you where to install the files make sure that your startup volume is selected (it should be selected by default) before clicking “Continue”.

10. After clicking “Install” you will be prompted to log in. In order to continue the installation you must be an administrator on the Mac. If you do not have administrator rights, contact someone who does to complete the installation.

11. When a message appears saying the software was successfully installed, click “Close”. 

Configuring Sophos Anti-Virus for the Proxy:
**Please Note: This process is only required for machines on-campus. If you are setting up Sophos on your home Mac, you do not need to complete this section.

On the Apple menu bar click on the “Sophos Anti-Virus” Icon ( ).
Open Preferences
In the Preferences Window:
Unlock window (bottom left corner).
Choose “AutoUpdate”.
Choose “Use system proxy settings”.
Lock Window.
Exit. 

Operating Sophos Anti-Virus:

To scan a whole drive:

1) Open Sophos Anti-Virus by clicking on the in the menu bar and selecting “Open Sophos Anti-Virus”.

2) Select the drives you wish to scan by clicking on the circle next to them (selected drives will have a green circle next to them). Make sure all drives are selected that you wish to scan and then press the green triangle to begin the scan.

3) Once the scan is complete Sophos will report the results of the scan in the area below the white space. (See below)

4) Quit from “Sophos Anti-Virus” after reviewing the results of the scan.
